vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
im just finishing up the engine/trans swap on the 67 and im run into a problem. since i dont have the original intake on the truck my vacuum line doesnt fit anymore. i might be able to do some tweaking on the intake end to get it to line up but the trans end is different. whats happening is the new modulator nipple shoots straight out and the old one came out and did a 90* degree turn forwards. since i have a hard line this wont fit back on, what i want to know is can i just get an elbow or even just connect the old hard line to hose then hose to the modulator or does that hard line need to seat right into the modulator nipple? i hope this makes sense. ill attach some pictures to help explain what im talking about. thanks guys, Derek

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
mine has always had a rubber line attaching the hard line to the modulator and a rubber line going into the back of the carb right and the bottom. never had any problems with it. hope that helps

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
yup. i see the problem. just make sure your line has the tab that holds it to the bell houising bolt to keep it from shaking around and you will need to run rubber hose from the ends of the tubing to the vacuum modulator and the intake.
you engine looks killer.. great job.. |

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
Why not go with the updated style of your intake and run a stainless steel shielded hose from the vacuum source to the modulator and make it look great.

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
if this stainless steel shielded hose is just a cover over a normal vac line, it's a bad idea.
Not really sure what you are refering to there, never seen nor heard of anyone running anything but a normal steel tube. |

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
Why do you think it is a bad idea? If you purchase hose that is sold for AN lines and use it for a clean install, then it works just fine. I have had shielded lines installed for a long time. They stand up to a lot of nasties and fit into clean theme. The other option is to get a solid stainless line and pollish it.

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
thanks rage, the headers are for first gen camaros. they are made by dynomax, i got them from summit. they fit good but the passenger side i had to do a bit of "trimming" on the frame rail just for a bit more clearance but other then that they seem allright. as for the line i think i know what you mean, why do the vacuum lines have tapered ends? just to fit inside the modulator and intake fitting im guessing? i guess i should probably also clamp the rubber hose ends on the modular end of the line when i hook it all up? thanks for baring with me here im no mechanic by any means i just know how to bolt stuff together
thanks, Derek

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
your welcome brother..yup the tapered ends are supposed to fit in the fitting itself and make it more sturdy. and the rubber hose just goes over the top to stop leaks..
i have hose clamps on mine too. i had some small hose clamps left over from a few fuel filters..the kind you squeeze the little ears to open, and release. nice job.. i like your valve covers Last edited by rage'nrat638; 07-12-2007 at 06:58 AM. |

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
You should also use cable ties on the vacuum hose where you connect it. This will keep it from working loose.

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
Wire ties are cheaper & easier too. But the end result is the same a good secure fit.
I like those valve covers too. Anyone know where to get a GMC version? Or would it look ok with Chevrolet on my GMC engine? Did you paint you own block? What did you use? s/t

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
I got the dupli color high temp (1200) for my exhaust manifolds got them sand blasted and ready to go. They say you can back the paint on for a stronger finish. We’ll see. I’m also using black on the manifolds. Think it’ll look ok?

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
I said "just a cover over a regular vac hose"... If you run a vac line of that length, you run the risk of the hose colapsing, also, the placement leaves it vonerable to heat.
Now, an AN line wouldn't work on a normal vac line, so you are talking about something else all together. As far as a clean install, personally I like trying to make these kinds of things disapear to your eye. A normal steel line, painted black, or engine colr, and routed from the back of the intake, would practicly be invisible, while a polished piece, or a steel braided line (which damages just about everything it comes in contact with) screams HEY LOOK AT ME. Details man make, or break a clean engine compartment, and one of the cool things about these trucks... or cars from this era all together, is the lack of clutter. you pop the hood, and the engine is right there in front of you. No 12 miles of vac lines, no plastic covers, nothing restricts your eyes from seeing what you want to see... the engine. So personally, and this is nothing but my opinion here, I like trying to make a lot of the details, escape your eyes when you first look. |

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
You really think that a vacuum line will collapse in a 3 foot run. I would disagree, or it would have caused the Manufacturers some major grief in the past. The under hood side of my son's 90 Lumina is nothing but 3 to 4 foot vacuum hose runs, some of them are hard plastic, but very few.
Of course it is up to the beholder. As for screaming HEY, why do you think we even open the hoods? Last edited by piecesparts; 02-01-2007 at 09:45 PM. |

Re: vacuum line from intake to trans modulator question.
New vacumn modulators, the straight kind like you have usually come with a 90 degree rubber hose to make the connection, parts house or tranny shop should have one of those little hoses, they are usually a little to long, so you may need to trim one or both ends to line up with the original steel line.
On the top end on the manifold, many had a small end that went inside of the manifold fitting, and a short piece of hose on the outside kept it sealed up.
