Brake question

I did the rear brakes on my '68 C10 today and am wondering what the spring around the outside of the drum is for. I have never seen that before. Thanks

Re: Brake question

From what I have heard it was a device to help cool the drum by helping air movement.. But I cannot confirm it.

Re: Brake question

I dunno either, but I thought it was to help control vibrations which would otherwise result in brake noise. To kinda dampen things a bit.

Re: Brake question

the spring is supposed to dampen shatter
it's the same thing when they trun a drum (resurface) it on a machine.
you will see them wrap a big rubber band (strap) around it.

how well it work's?

Re: Brake question

when i still had the GMC, the drums had these things, when one flew off, that side rang when goin down the road.
Io was pretty p!ssed when i replaced 2 of them, and they had no provisions for the spring. But, luckily, the new ones didn't vibrate, but they did wear VERY poorly.

This was the same Q I had my first day i logged onto this site.

Re: Brake question

Thanks guys. I forgot to put one of them on before I put the wheel on so I think I will run without it for a while and see if I notice anything. I'm thinkin' I won't be able to tell the differance.
