Post HEI problems(HELP)

I just put an HEI distributor in my Blazer and it will not fire. The battery wire is hooked up correctly and is hot when the switch is on. What can I do? Also, what is the best gap set for an HEI? Thanks in advance.

I stuck one in mine with no problems.

You are sure there is a good strong 12 volts at the connector of the HEI while the engine is trying to start?

Make sure you use a large, 12 ga wire to the dist.

Check to make sure you connected the 12 volts to the proper connector, and not to the tach output.

What did you connect the ground lead of your voltmeter to? Make sure the dist. has a good ground back to the battery.

Was this HEI dist pulled from a running engine? I'm thinking "module" unless this is a new or rebuilt unit.

Also make sure your Plugs are gapped at 45 and then double check and make sure your Cap and Rotor are not cracked!! I bought an Accel HEI from http://www.jegs.com and when I recieved my dist. it had a cracked rotor, so I replaced that and it Fired Up.. Also make sure the Module is good!! No fire w/ out a good module, cap, rotor or spark plug wires !!

the dist has to get grounded back to the battery through the engine block. Sometimes the block isn't grounded well to the battery. you can check with an ohmmeter. Are you getting any spark at all?

You may also need to look at the pick up coil wires. They come out from under the rotor into the distributor harness that connects up with the module. They can break over time from the vac advance moving the coil back and forth.

1>Find out if your getting spark.
2>If there is no spark then take off the coil cap at the top of the dist and make sure that the wires aren't fried.
3>Get a tester light and see if there is power on the red wire and power on the yellow wire(make sure your ignition is on when you do this)
4>Make sure that the black wire on the coil is grounded to the outer steel part of the coil.

If all is good then the coil isn't the problem, its something else.
Let me know how it goes.

HEI shouldn't have all that.
If there is no spark, double check the wire you ran for the power is plugged into the ACC/UNFUSED term on your fuse box.

Try this. On the HEI cap, there is a plastic connector housing, two seperate connectors. Inside connector is labeled C (Brown wire) Grd (Black) B+ (red or Pink), these wires connect to the HEI alumn base. Outside connector labeled Tach & Bat.
Turn the HEI cap upside down, look for three metal blades, inside connector. The center blade is for the HEI coil ground. Next remove the cover for the HEI coil, check that the ground blade is attached to the top of the coil. Remove coil, turn the coil upside down and check for a second ground wire from the bottom of the coil to the cap. If these are missing or damaged, the coil will be damaged.
As long as you have the HEI coil removed, you might want to clean the five metal blades and check the others wires for damage.

I have to wait until this weekend. My blazer is at my parents house and I am in college. Thanks for all the suggestions and help. I will let you guys know how it goes when I get back Sunday night.
