pivot point?
Does anyone know what this part is called? there is supposed to be a spring there between the clamps but I,m not sure what its called . I was told that it might be a pivot point?

Shift linkage pivot rod? Mine doesn't have a spring.

I suppose a spring could be installed at that location, but I have never seen one on any trucks. The spring would be a little redundant as the spring on the transmission shift bracket keeps the linkage in place.

Here is a picture of what you have. I agree with the other guys. I don't think there is supposed to be anything in there. I imagine there was a problem with the bellcrank engaging the shift lever so the owner shimmed it out so it would work. It looks to me like the shift lever on the transmission is worn out. It should look like the one in the picture. LockDoc

Great picture of the linkage. The illustration in the Service Manual is not near as clear but there are no springs shown in it either. (I saved the pic as it is very clear). Jim

Funny thing is those bellcranks have a tendency to wear, and people would weld and braze them when they could just order a new one from GM. I have two NOS ones that I have had for over 7 years. Wound up not needing them at all, but have just squirreled them away.
Find a friend at a GM dealership....I'm betting they're still available. When I dig these out, I'll check the part number and post it, if you're interested.

the springs were found on the 73+ trucks. no reason to/not run them.
