70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
Ok This is my question...
About five years ago I purchased an NOS grille for my 70cst. Back then one could not get repros grilles with the black letters. Now I see you can. Since I am not going to restore my truck to Barret Jackson standards am I better purchasing a repro which looks as nice and sell the NOS grille to someone who has to have all NOS parts on their restoration. I have already asked one with vast knowledge of these trucks and he gave me his recommendation which I appreciate so now I ask what would you do if you were in my situation. I can probably sell the NOS grille and purchase a repro with money left over. I then can put the extra money into other areas of my truck. So…what would you do?

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
Actually you can still get a sorta NOS one, GM still sells them, but as you
said the lettering is not black, at least I think not, Tim Christian had one at Memphis Super Chevy last year in the $450 range IIRC, Hope it helps.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
If you are not gonna use it, find someone who is buying NOS parts. Ask them for an appraisal and sell it, if you think its a reasonable price. Grilles are hard to come by for a good price. But I would sell it to someone who is going to use it.---Andy

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
This is a NOS Grille with the black letters. If I decide to sell it I would prefer to sell it to someone who has a truck they are restoring verses someone who wants to purchase it and then resell it for a fast buck.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
I would keep it being as it is paid for. In my experience there is no substitute for the fit of a NOS part. Of course if you are in a tight for cash it should be easy to move. I would probably send it to Ebay to get the maximum return on it.

If You Go To Sell It I'd Like To Be Put In Line. I Passed Up One At Swap Meet For $200 A Few Weeks Ago. Thought I Was Clever And Was Going To Get A Bargin. Brand Friggin New. I'm Obviously Not As Smart As I Think I Am.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
Ok,N.O.S. ran out in the late`80s...FACT!Then came repro in the aftermarket. Then came GM licensed repro in the aftermarket. Then came GM Restoration Parts. The latter two are one in the same.GM just figured out they were missing out on a market. What you buy now from GM Parts is the same reproduction part anyone else is selling if it is marked GM licensed.I`ve been buying these parts from the same dealer for 30 years and have followed this through it all.
If you can find a quality repro part that you can varify fits for a resto/driver, I`d sell the N.O.S. to an elitist for top dollar leaving no room for mark-up.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
special-K
If I decide to sell it I want the buyer to one who is going to install it on his/her truck. I bought this grille before the repros were out (the ones w/black letters). If I could make a profit I would use the extra money to put back into my truck. As mentioned my truck will not be a trailer queen and it will be driven and some day I will hand it down to my son. I appreciate all the feedback.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
I hear you.I`ve come to the same point with some of my N.O.S. parts and the reality that I wasn`t going to build "The Ultimate K/20" that I had planned and gathered parts for.I sold a tailgate(I have nice original/used ones),a dash pad,and all console pieces to make one and it put 4 digits in my pocket.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
You know with this many people on here, you will get a lot of answers to any question. Some of them may even be right!
GM sells new grills with the black letters embossed on them. They are new GM. I would call that NOS. No better or worse than those from 10-20 years ago...just expensive! The GM aluminum is definitely stronger than the softer repros. I don't know of any repros with the letters embossed---only smooth with stick on decals. GM will not release the license to stamp the CHEVROLET name on the repros-yet, while they still have them. Anyone that knows better, please correct me...IF you really know and aren't just guessing. |

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
PICKMUP...
You just said something that I didn't realize. I thought you could get repros with the emboossed black letters. But if I understand you correctly all the repros are smooth w/o letters. Again I thought I had all my facts. This info will help me make my decision. I am glad there are those with knowledge greater than mine who is willing to share their vast knowledge with those of us who are a little short of truck smarts. Thanks again.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
I call it new re-issue.May be just as good, but nothing old about that stock.N.O.S. is hard to come by.It`s easy to go get a new part, yet expensive.I never started a business(officially),but I`ve been into the evolution of this whole thing from the begining.I wouldn`t say something if it wasn`t true.Once computers came around the dealer parts world, guys like Seth Doulton went about locating and cleaning out old stocks around the nation.I met Seth back in the`70s when he was first starting into the old Chevy truck parts game.He was into AdvanceDesign and I was into the NewBreeds and we`d help each other when we found parts the other was looking for.He saw the depletion in sight and started into the process of putting together dies to stamp parts fom prints.I`m like everyone else.I`m still listening and learning and try to not come off as a know-it-all,but enjoy offering what I know. These new parts are made from original prints,I believe.I don`t see anything as good as N.O.S. unless, maybe it was stamped from the same dies.Few dies survived being scrapped.
Not trying to make stink, just holding my ground.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
If any of you guys actually wants to sell one of them, PM me with a price. I'm about to have to make a decision on "GM licensed" repro or the less expensive "it'll do for now" part. An actual NOS would swing my decision if the price were within range.

Re: 70 NOS Grille Sell or Keep?
I'll throw one more in the ring. The Truck Shop(Ca.) had grills w/letters in Moultrie in Nov. I didn't ask ,but they were cheaper than GM by far. I think they were $350.
