71-72 outer grille question

I see they make a repro and a GM. Which one do people usually use, and why? Also, what is the difference between the two? The repro is substantially less money than the GM one, so I assume the difference is quite huge. Thanks!

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

Most of the time it is a budget issue. The GM ones are usually better quality. All of the aftermarket ones are made overseas. If you are willing to pay more then go for the GM.

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

when I replaced mine i got a repro and didnt have any issues with fit or finish, but I think i read someplace that 71's had a black stripe around the outside of the grill, all the repros that I have seen dont have that are are the 72 style. I dont know how true the black stripe is but my 71 had it on the grill i replaced.

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

My truck is a 72, so no black stripe here. A repro is looking pretty good right now at half the price though.

You should talk to Frank at Frank's pick-m up's. I remeber him saying he willnot even sell them because the fitment is soo bad, remember the sting of a bad purchase lingers long after the sweetness of a good deal.

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

I bought mine through Brothers (original GM) when they were on sale, and I have heard about fit and finish problems with some of the after market products. Good luck.

Blue85, that looks great! Being chrome, does that mean its steel (I've seen steel chrome ones, but never aluminum). Also, who did you buy it through? Thanks!

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

I bought GM just because I have had so many bad experiences with aftermarket parts. The vendor I purchased from told me they hadn't been having any problems with the repros but that was some time ago.

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

I've gotta make a Scott's order anyways, so I think I'll go for the chrome steel. A little brighter than aluminum, and tougher too. Thanks guys!

Re: 71-72 outer grille question

I bought an Aftermarket one and had to "can" it and buy the GM one. Even the GM one needed trimming where it fits to the front fenders. But then I have Tri Plus aftermarkets fron t fenders too.
