1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
Hi,
I am new to the Chevy truck world. I am looking for feedbacks in regards to this 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton Longhorn that I'm about to purchase. Is this a good buy for $500? The ad says" Great project, Collector Extended Box, wood floor, Brand new Rebuilt 350 turbo trans. 350 V8, Blew gasket, Needs work, will throw in 400 turbo trans pictured in back of truck" Last edited by OregonC20; 02-27-2007 at 04:04 AM. |

Re: 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
what did the truck come with look in the glove box and there will be a list of stuff the truck came with most came with a big block 396--402 1972 had the 402 500.oo if the bed is in good shape and not to much cancer in cab and in saying cancer meaning if you can see day light thats cancer and that means body work by how the end of the bed looks this truck dose not seem to be a longhorn cus on the drivers side the place where the headacke rack would go that is suppost to go all the way to the floor where the extra gas tank filler neck would go but LOnghorn man will be able to help you on that one

Re: 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
I guess at $500 you can`t go wrong. If you want it real nice, that`s just the first drop in the bucket. It`s always cheaper to buy one someone has poured their money in.Does it run?Does it need the trans replaced?
One of my pieves is how comeone can let something go down hill, then sell it as "collectible" and think they`re adding value by leaving an old transmission in the bed.Just for that,I`d offer $300.

Re: 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
Just remember deals like this are deals like this. Meaning it sounds like a good price but to get it running you are looking at a new engine, maybe new trans being he is throwing in another core( maybe original maybe not). So to put it on the road $$$$$. Then if you are buying it to be a "collector" then you will have to undo 30 some years of mistakes. Make sure you understand the time and cost involved with this "DEAL". It is a good price out east for something that looks in decent shape, I don't know about out NW, but check it out good.

Re: 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
Dwait is dead on right.
However, after agreeing 100% with his responce... it easily looks to be worth 500 bucks with the way the prices have been going. What gasket is bad? Why does he wanna give a tranny to whom ever buys it... to clean up the yard, ot is he indicating something is also wrong with the tranny? I wouldn't say "most of them came with a big block"... small blocks still out number big block in the longhorn trucks... but, I would say a big block is a little more common under the hood of a longhorn verses 'other' trucks. And, BTW, that is in fact a longhorn. The stake pockets are not up against the front wall, it's hard to tell, but they DO look to be 6inches back. Welcome to the board... please look at my site in my signiture for more longhorn info. |

Can we say,"there`s no such thing as a $500 truck?"Just a down payment.Hey,it`s better than paying more and looking at the same work.

Re: 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
Welcome to the board from Kent, WA. I spent a few years in Salem, nice town. We have some good board members there.
Personally I like $200 trucks more...especially when they don't have engines and transmissions but if the sheet metal is pretty decent it is worth it. You can always find a "running" engine and tranny for the truck on craigslist for a bargain just to get it moving. Make sure you start and drive the engine/tranny combo you buy...even do a compression check on the engine. If it ain't running...it is a core and price it accordingly.

"pardon my hijack"
What are the big ways to tell if its a true longhorn? I know a guy that's wanting to get rid of a 72 3/4ton that had a 396(not sire if it was original motor). it's an A/C cab. I was going to buy it for parts. I can get it for $350.00 "end of hijack"

Re: 1972 Chevy pu 3/4 ton longhorn
Thank you so much for all you guys input. According to the seller, he rebuilt the trans and engine. Truck has been sitting for a year at a friend's house and seller has been told to move it. Truck was a daily runner before seller blew head gasket. Seller said that the truck has A/C but ball vents are missing. Ad appeared on Craigslist is Salem and the truck is located 20 miles south of Salem. After asking many questions about the overall condition of the truck, I decided to buy the truck without personally inspecting the truck. I know that this is probably stupid to do but I went with my gut feeling on this one. I will be posting more pictures when the truck arrives to my home this weekend.
Thank you again to all of you! Here is the Vin # CCE2422172794 Last edited by OregonC20; 02-27-2007 at 10:10 PM. |
