Advice on my first C10 build
Hey guys,
I am new here, kind of excited so excuse my long-winded post. I was picking my daughter up from school the other day and found this C10. It's a 72? 6cyl 250 3 on the tree longbed with 75,000 miles. It really caught my eye and I have been looking for a project for the small block build I have going on in my garage. I paid $1400 for this and thought I got a good deal (did I do OK?). I have no idea what it is worth. needs a rocker and some body work but the floors are fine and I will also rebuild the cab corners. I will use this truck for feed store, home depot, cruising w/the wife kids and an occasional run down my local 1/4 mile for fun. (Island Dragway in NJ). Inspiration from this board and all of your incredible builds has given me the following ideas: (Please comment on any red flags or bad moves you see in my ideas). 3" drop spindals 4" spring drop in rear Appropriate drop shoks Install my zz4 385hp 4oo tq SBC All bodywork, best I can, not to be a show truck. Paint a powder blue or someing close to that White SS stripes up hood and roof Centerline wheels of unknown size and width Custom grill (older model, if I can retrofit like a 68 or something Chrome rear bumber Bed cover Any comment would be appreciated. I will be supporting this board by joining and would really appreciate all of your input. I will give back as much as I can. I will offer my unused and pulled stock parts to members who need them at no charge. I would also love a rendering of my truck from the photoshop folks and willing to pay for it, I am not sure how any of this works and know how valuable your time is. Providing me info would would not be a waste of your time, I am 39 yo, well funded and not a 15 yo dreamer (not thats a bad thing)! Welcome!! Get out while you can!! Before you know it you will have a frame sitting on jackstands in your garage wondering why it is going to cost $20,000to get it back together. Nice looking start!! Your ideas sound great. Thats how mine started but I now have it tore all the way down and chopped the frame to a short. The more i get into it the more ideas I get. This is the best resource on the web by far.

I definately have more photos and will post here. I really appreciate the sincere interest here on this board. Amazing how everyone pulls together. Priceless knowledge and resources!
PS - I just looked at my new title and it is a 71 not a 72 as I thought. Not sure there is much of a difference. Very cool to me either way... |

Looks like a good deal to me...
Now is it just the angle, or is that rear tire way smaller than the front tire? Oh yeah... to the club. You'll find an abundance of knowledge, and some right friendly folk around these here parts... ---EDIT--- If you want it photo chopped, post the pic in the Photoshop forum (under general i believe) with an explanation of what you want done, and somebody would be happy to to it for you.

Sounds to me like you have a solid plan, and have thought it through. I was wondering however how much feed you are planning on hauling? Although I think you will be fine, a truck loaded down with feed with your drop may give you some bottoming out issues. If it is just a few sacks of feed you will be fine. Overall, I think you got a great deal and a great looking truck to start with.

You will be fine then, I know from experience I have made a few 3/4 ton trucks sag pretty bad in the rear with full loads cattle feed. Keep us posted on your progress.

looks like a nice start, but be carful thats how it all starts before you know it you'll have ten more out back three tore apart in the garage and not a one too drive like most of us here

I agree. Great deal for the money, even with the upcoming bodywork.
I didn't see where you mention anything about the planned tranny or the rear end ratio. The 6 cyl manual tranny might not hold up behind a 400 lbft V8, unless you treat it gently. Upgrading to a muncie would be great, but also consider the overdrive manuals. For mileage you'll want a final drive ratio on the 3.0:1 range depending on the height of the new tires. If your ratio's a lot higher, it might make sense to include a gear change in your plans. If the new tranny's going to be an automatic w/overdrive, a TH700 or a beefed up TH200 would be a great option. Food for thought.
