front control arms
is this the correct side for the hole or does it even matter?

It does matter.I don't know whether it goes front or back but there is a locating pin/nub that fits that recess.Someone will speak up.

it looks like there is a nub on the front and back where the ubolts bolt to the cross member, but the one in the front seems to stick out more the back one is almost flat

You Got it right.
I just took a look at mine and the only holes without a bunch of crap in them are the fronts.
