Power Steering Help

All, my power steering gearbox began leaking, then a whining noise, then no power steering. Getting ready to put a new gearbox in, what is the procedure to bleed the gearbox.

My first attempt was lock to lock with a full pump and the motor running. Fluid kept frothing up. Called tech at Redhead. He suggested lock to lock with out the motor running. Check level, refill, repeat process until no drop in fluid level. Solved the problem and its working great. I forgot to mention that it is much easier if you elevate the front end so that the wheels are off the ground. Good luck.

Man, now if I could just figure out how to do this with no steering column....

I suppose I could jack up the front end and move the wheel back and forth.

With power steering, you can slip the rag joint couple on, and with the motor running, PS pump turning, etc., turn it by hand.

I put a new pump, lines, and box on my 72 4x4 recently, and bled it in about 15 seconds. Turn one direction til resistance, turn the other way til resistance, repeat until lock to lock. It took no time at all.

Then I topped off the resivour, resivuor--er... spinny thing the fluid goes in.

when we were rebuilding the P/30 step vans at work, we found turning lock to lock with the engine off was the best way to do it. Then once you think it's good, fire it up and crank it lock to lock a couple times and check the level.
