Factory rear bumpers
What did the factory have for rear bumper options?
Did most arrive at the dealer without rear bumpers? Below are two pictures, the white 69 GMC is mine and the 70 GMC is currently on eBay. Both appear to have the same rear bumper. I had assumed that my rear bumper was an aftermarket bumper, but when I saw this one I wondered........... Or are they both simply the same aftermarket bumper? The tailgate looks pretty good on the green eBay truck!

Re: Factory rear bumpers
Good post! I have the same type of bumper as the ones in the pictures and have wondered that as well.

Re: Factory rear bumpers
My bumper was just like that except it had "Ancira-Winton Chevrolet, San Antonio, Texas" stamped into it.

Re: Factory rear bumpers
I guess the real question is, which trucks came with the step bumper as standard equipment and which came with the "sport" (I know Andy hates that term ) bumper as standard equipment? Which bumper could be optioned out for which?

Re: Factory rear bumpers
there was no standard rear bumper, there was a step and tow... and the non step bumper. Neither came in any option package, and in reality, there were probably more built with no bumper at all, the dealerships often installed there own after market or dealer accesory bumper, and many of them (esp in the south and west) had there dealership name, and city/state engraved in the bumper.

Re: Factory rear bumpers
Dan, that is the non step bumper, or sport bumper as everyone wants to call it. It may not be original on your truck, but that is a stock bumper.

Re: Factory rear bumpers
This is not Dan but that is the bumper on my truck "the sport" which is what the spid says , BUT the brackets that are on it appear to be for a step bumper which makes it have at least a 3 " gap . And the brackets that are there now don't even look original , they don't seem to be bolted to the frame factory. Are the short brackets available? I am not going to use these.

Re: Factory rear bumpers
No , it says sport truck , but like you and others have said it also depends on what the dealer did to it. Mine also has two gas tanks under the bed and I think they were trying to mock a camper special.

Re: Factory rear bumpers
I've seen a few like mine, it looks like a step/tow bumper but has two arms welded to the ends that extend up towards the wheel well. Does anyone know if those were an option? They would look pretty cool in chrome. Sorry my camera is broke, so no pics available

Re: Factory rear bumpers
the custom sprot truck was the way they worded cheyenne on some trucks. Thename of the package chainged, but no one told the person typing out the SPID. Your truck came with no bumper on it at all. Either one was installed at the dealer, or in someone's back yard. Your fuel tanks were dealer installed too... or, aftermarket.
Making it a camper special woulda involved making it a ford. To make it a custom camper, all it woulda needed was upgraded springs, HD shocks, HD tires, and a sway bar. |

Re: Factory rear bumpers
Richard the brackets you have look to be from a later model fleetside truck 73-
The literature lists both step and sport as optional depending on the equipment that the truck had been optioned with or its particular package. In my opinion the sliding rear step bumper would be a difficult bumper to locate (used on custom camper trucks to adjust for the slide in campers) My 71 Cheyenne super came with the optional step bumper that has been shown in several of the posts. Also to add to Andy's post sway bar came with 2wd trucks with custom camper , 4x4 trucks did not come with sway bar. Last edited by 71 super; 04-26-2007 at 03:08 PM. Reason: add info |
