How many miles on your brakes?

I usually drive with the stereo playing pretty loud so I don't always hear the messages that my truck is sending to me. I heard it yesterday so I investigated the sound and low and behold;

$120 later, 2 new drums, 2 new wheel cylinders, 1 set new shoes and 1 hardware kit. After some calculations I realized that those brakes have been on there for about 120,000+ miles!

Sounds about right for rear drums. Honestly, at work when servicing a car, or a light truck that goes empty most of the time, we don't even pull the drums tiull 100,000 miles, justa quick peak in the backing plates and that's it.

My truck isn't a show truck and I do use it to haul stuff pretty regularly. Mostly tools and supplies. I had 1000lbs of base rock in the back when I heard the brakes crying for mercy

Re: How many miles on your brakes?

I'm not real sure how many miles my trucks have on them, or the brakes for that matter, the spedo hasn't worked on the 67 for as long as i can remember, and neither have the brakes for that matter....Dad bought new shoes for it sometime in the early 80's, but never got around to putting them on. I need to go poke around in his shop and find them shoes.

Me either, but then I don't live in Guerneville. And they aren't even red in the picture from the place I got them from: Kragen Auto Parts

Re: How many miles on your brakes?

My truck needs them to, but I can't get the rear drums off. I've always given them a couple clicks once a year or so and I think they've worn a groove into the drum, because they will NOT come off!!!

Re: How many miles on your brakes?

The brakes haven't been done on the truck since about 1990. Not sure how many miles exactly, but it's been my DD for most of that time so alot I'm sure..I've had to replace the MC twice in that time but never the shoes front or rear...

Ocourse, now that I've said that they's need to be done...

Re: How many miles on your brakes?

When I worked at a shop this is what I observed:
Fronts (disk) at 60k for a normal driver. Some folks who go full speed right up to the stop sign wear them out a bit quicker.
Rears (drums) twice that. 100k - 120k.
The OEM brakes last twice as long as the replacements. So if you got 120k on the first set, that set from Kragen's will go about 60k.

The truck has 452,328 miles...so no, they weren't the original brakes. I put them on in '03 but this time I had to change the drums as well.

Re: How many miles on your brakes?

The entire braking system was redone in my '72 C-20 in 1999. Since then it has had maybe 10k put on it. Should be good for another 30+ years.

My '67 has 89k on it and has never had the brakes touched.

Re: How many miles on your brakes?

My observations on full size vahicles, vans and pick ups (again, mostly unloaded) puts the front pads more at 30 - 40K most of the time.
And you are WAYright on replacement parts...esp at discount parts stores.... they wear down in no time.
