question about burn outs?
Hi,
I have no way of judging how quick my truck is...I will take it to the track at the end of the month. I have nothing to compare it to. When I do a burn out..from a dead stop, no brake, I lay 30 feet of rubber, but no smoke. If I power brake, it will spin all the way through first and to about 4000rpm in second, and a lot of smoke is this about normal for a slightly hopped up truck..I mean, does a stock 350 do this? it has a posi with 3:73 and 285-15 tires oh yea on the power brake I release the brake at 4000 rpm in first..I know it sounds kinda dumb, but its the way I have been judging improvements

Well, from a dead stop, mine will spin one tire for a second, but that's it. That is stock exept for the HEI I just put in. And the only other one I have driven won't even do that. (It belongs to someone else though, so...) lol

lol, no, it wasn't your that I was talking about. It's a 69 lwb that belongs to someone I know. I borrowed it when mine died a few weeks ago. It has a 4 speed manual, and a supposedly rebuilt (it looks new, but it sure smokes pretty bad) 350, with a edelbrock performer intake, and a holley 4160. It has no problem keeping up with the traffic on the freeway, but it doesn't even have as mush power as mine without the HEI.

The only vehicle I have ridden in that even came close to having as much power as your truck was (sorry lol) a honda accord that looked stock and rusty on the outside, but it was pretty quick. I don't know what kind of 1/4 mile times it ran, but the guy said he would go though the traps at 140. But, no more talking about rice rockets here. lol

Burnouts are not a good indication of power. I first learned this when I did a big burnout in a 1948 Ford F-3 with a worn out stock engine (flat head). It depeds more on the tires, and temperture, and how you release. On the other hand, I hardly ever burnout in my 450 Horsepower 455 Catalina. I imagine the only way is time slips or a dyno.

where are u gonna put your catch can at? i almost ordered one with my order this morning but i dont have a place to put it and if they dont check for it then i guess i wont care. my friend (with the eclipse) said all they asked him was if it was stock and he was like "yeah" (that was in sac though)
so what did they all check on your truck during tech? or did they check anything at all? too bad ididnt have the "tan beast" that woulda been funny to race (80 toyota pickup, it had a cam but still had no power) as long as u run over 14 you wont hafta have a helmet, eventually i'll hafta get one when i get the driving down and a posi n stuff. but i should be fine for a while.

i put the catch can on the drivers side of the radiator..I took out the washer bottle.. there is a nice str8 piece of metal that runs beside the radiator.. I havent gone through tech yet.. I emailed the track and got the info..I wanted to know if I need a shoulder harness(no)..helmet(no..if over 12 sec,) catch can(yes..32 oz.) and insurance. I figure I should run in the high 14s, if i hook up

i have no room on the driver's side of teh radiator (a/c) and passenger side i have my box for my electric fans there. i'll try to figure something out by then. my main concern right now is changing intake gaskets (dont ask, i'll prolly post something about it later).
i'm not worried about hooking up because i know i won't!!! haha. i need a posi badly (especially with this 406) cuz i hafta baby it every where i go, i cant even drive normal. i didnt notice any difference when i put the gas tank in the bed. how are u gonna mount the summit catch can? it doesnt come with like straps or anything ( i dont think) oh yeah... www.reddingdragstrip.org anyone in the area should go cuz its only 15 bucks

For a catch can I use a bicycle drink bottle, the type that has a bracket with it to fit on the frame. They are cheap and you can use the bracket to mount to the rad support. Get one that is transparent and you will know if there is any water in it. Run the overflow hose to the bottom of the bottle and it will suck up any water when it cools down (hopefully).

I've managed to do burnouts quite often but only recently. Stock 350, 3.07 gears 31 X 15 X 10.5 tires. I don't make any smoke, but since I unloaded my 200 lb toolbox the ass end is really light.
In wet conditions forget about hitting the gas too hard, no traction.

work on your launches, if u have time find a deserted road and practice launching or try different things when u get to the track. it sounds like you need to lower the rpm that you launch at.
here's a tip: let some of the air out of your rear tires, it will hook up better that way.
