Another Posi ?
Ok first thread... I've got a '71 C-10 with a 350/350 combo. My truck is a Frankenstein truck ('71 cab, '69 hood, '69 C-20 bed its got the side toolbox, '68 GMC bed floor, and Repo doors, fenders, inner fenders, and core support). I've replaced the front cab posts, cab corners, rockers, and floorboards to the tranny hump. I'm Rod-storing it. It looks like someone customized it in 1972. No big rims, no flashy audio (but a nice system), just a clean truck. When i opened the rear end i got a huge shocker, it was a posi rear end from the factory. My question is who made it and can i get parts for it. I've heard Eaton made it but nobody can say for sure. Any help? I'll post some pics when i figure out how to, LOL

Re: Another Posi ?
What parts would you want??? I'm sure you could get a new clutch pack for it if the original ones are worn. Aside from a new ring and pinion, that's about it.

Re: Another Posi ?
Does it look like this?
If so it is an Eaton Limited slip, (we call it Posi) Depending on your gear ratio it's a series 3 if it's 3.07 to 3.73, series 4 is 3.73 to 4.56 |

Re: Another Posi ?
If it looks like that with the 4 sprngs, then yes, you can buy a whole rebuild kit that has new springs & clutch pack & bearings. I think their around $120

Re: Another Posi ?
Then your in luck, there's another posi unit that is made up of a **** load of little parts (I think they call it a gov lock) & they have problems, the one you have is the good one.

Yes....do not rebuild a gov lock. Throw it away if you have any kind of power.

Re: Another Posi ?
You also might find out that you don't have a shim pack....you will actually have 2 big spacers from the factory. It's important, if you do get another carrier, to set the backlash up the same. I got real lucky when I did mine. I had 2 big spacers and wound up being able to reuse them. I gained about .02 on the install, and then a trip around block will get me a .01 or .02 loss from everything seating in. You will need a dial indicator and a magnetic base if you try and do it yourself. You will also need limited slip gear oil and a high quality posi additive. The additive is a must. Please click on this link to see what your end result will be.........

Re: Another Posi ?
He's right, if you don't set it up coreectly, your just making a grenade that will go off when you least expect it, check out this article, it may shed some light on the whole process.
