Is my Neutral Safety Switch bad?

I adjusted it Andy's method (Longhorn Man).
"Have an assistant stand in back of the truck.
Chock the wheels, or use the parking brake if it is good.
Place shifter in reverse
Slide the switch back and forth untill the back up lights are on.
Test it in park and neutral... it should be good."

(All the following comments apply looking at the column from the steering wheel end).

Well, the kicker is, everything is good in N with the reverse lights on, which is with the switch rotated to about 11:00. The truck starts, and I have reverse lights. However, I can't get it started in P until about 12:00 and then any degree back clockwise around to 2:00.

No happy medium. 11:00 is the first time the R ilghts come on, and the first time you will get it to start in N. 12:00 is the first time it will start in P.

So, is the switch bad, or is it something else?

Re: Is my Neutral Safety Switch bad?

real quick... does the column matchthe tranny?
As in... are you trying to use a 3 speed auto shifter with a 700R4 by chance?
Personally, I just bypass the stupid thing.

Why yes I am. Exactly that.

Bypass? Just clip the wire that runs to it for the neutral side or what?

No you can't just clip them. they have to be either joined together, or hide a switch so the casual thief can't just pop the ignition switch..IE a connection needs to be made for the starter to engage.

Re: Is my Neutral Safety Switch bad?

if you wanted to bypass it, just unplug the wire from the switch, and place a jumper in the wire side of the plug... I think the wire is purple on both sides... jump from one side of the plug, to the other.
Now it will start in any gear, so don't be a retard and park it leaving it in gear... becouse it'll roll down the driveway into the neighbors bushes and you'll feel stupid, and then it'll jump when you start it up to move it.

Re: Is my Neutral Safety Switch bad?

So then as far as the reverse lights go - just move it over to where they come on, and I will be fine (with it being bypassed)?

I just hope all this will jive with my alarm. It has a kill switch that only allows you to start with the key...and all kinds of other stuff that I don't really understand that works. I know if the battery goes dead, and you try to start it without arming/disarming first, you'll trigger it because it thinks you are doing something out of the ordinary (like you had the alarm off, so it needs to be assured that everything is alright).

ANYHOW - thanks.
