Is anyone familiar with this part?
This weekend I was looking at a 72' Cheyenne w/350 SB my buddy bought as a builder. I noticed there was a small metal tube bolted to the block with a 90 degree bend in it that the starter solenoid wires snaked through it. I don't have this on my 71' Cheyenne and was wondering if this is a stock part that disappeared over the years on mine when the starter was replaced once upon a time. Or if it was something unique to the 72'. I assume it was to protect them from exhaust manifold heat or the elements.
Do any of you have this metal tube around your starter solenoid wires? |

Re: Is anyone familiar with this part?
never seen or heard of anything like that and i'd think it would trap and increase heat from the exhaust in that area eventually causing the wires to break down and short out

All of my b-body Caprices/Impalas have that. Never seen it on any of my trucks though.
For what it's worth, I've never had any issues with that leg of the harnesses. When bolted in place properly, the tube actually keeps the wires away from the exhaust nicely. |

Re: Is anyone familiar with this part?
Pretty common for a 70's car, don't know about trucks tho. It bolts to the bell housing right? It's just a tube for the wires to keep 'em clear of the exhaust.

Re: Is anyone familiar with this part?
My 1990 Chevy K1500 truck had one of those tubes installed. Looked kind of handy for keeping the wires protected.

Re: Is anyone familiar with this part?
my 72 c-30 has it. Yes it is supposed to keep the wires away from the exhaust, and if equipped, is where you would usualy find the fuesable link. Not sure about trapping heat, but it definatly is alot better than having a direct short from the main power onto the hot exhaust manifold or header

Re: Is anyone familiar with this part?
I thought the same thing about the benefits of it keeping the heat away. Unless someone comes back and says they have one on their 71'-72' 1/2 or 3/4, I'm guessing the engine in the truck my buddy picked up is a transplant from a 70's car. I'll have to do some more checking.

Re: Is anyone familiar with this part?
Yes a transplant from a car is most likely as a lot of these old trucks have.
