Radiator Core support Q

I'm working on building the 68, and looking over the parts I'm going to be needing in the future. I'm going to go with a GMC grill. However the core support for the 68 is a little different than the one in my 72 GMC. Mainly, the 72 GMC's has extra pieces behind the head lights.

Can I use a chevy core support with the GMC grill or do I need to get that extra piece to support the headlights?

I guess if all else fails, I can go look at the GMC's grill and see if its needed, but it's easier if someone here knows.

Re: Radiator Core support Q

If you use a GMC grill, you need a GMC core support. The main difference between the 68 Chev and the 72 GMC core is the headlight area. You can remove the headlight brackets from the GMC and fasten to the 68 Chev core. This would involve drilling several spot welds and reattaching the brackets with spot welds or bolts. The fenders are interchangable (but you already knew that).

The 72GMC grill means using the 72GMC hood. To use the 68 style hood with GMC grill you will need a 68 GMC grill top bar in place of the 72 top bar. The 68 top bar is harder to find than the 72 bar (2 years 67/68 vs 4 years69/72).

Use the GMC wire harness.

The 68 Chev has the windage tray that was discontinued after 68. This can be eliminated with the 72 GMC grill/core. The windage tray is GMC specific to provide access to the park/turn signal bulb. The latch needs to be GMC and specific to the hood - 68 vs. 72. The upright support needs to be GMC.

Hope this helps. Ask again if you have more questions. I am doing this project also. Making a 68 GMC front end instead of a Chev grill.
