POR15 Engine Paint - Surface Prep - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm getting ready to paint my engine and I need to decide between the spray bomb route and something like POR15. It seems POR15 wants the painted surface to be down to metal with none of the previous paint left on the surface. NO problem with the heads as those I will be glass beading, but not so for the block. Not very realistic to get all the old paint off of the block. What experience has everyone had with applying a POR15 product over existing paint?

I had a hard enough time with it on my bare block(chevy orange por15). It wanted to wrinkle and sag when brushed on. It was extremely thick. I thinned with laquer thinner and it worked a whole lot better. In the long run it is probably worth it. I have heard of a bad batch that came out and gave troubles, was it what I got,,,,I don't know for sure. It is extremely tough when dry though. I have a feeling it will outlast spray bomb for sure.
I would think you need bare metal, but maybe just try a spot and see.

I can't remember, cause it's been a while, but I think I used carb cleaner to get the paint off a motor once...

Engine just needs to be grease free according to their directions.

Use POR 15 prep kit and if you leave your old paint they have a primer that works with there stuff

I was looking through my old posts and found one, where I did use carb cleaner to take the paint off a block...

Carb cleaner might remove the old paint, but it also leaves a residue that the new paint won't like.

Oven cleaner will take most old paint off or go to your local parts house (Oreillys or Autozone in my area) & get some 'aircraft' stripper. It will remove the old paint.

I was the guy that got a bad batch. I was told that the bad batch had yellow stickers on it. So check your cans.
It works 500% better if you spray, brushing was an absolute nightmare. I took mine all the way to bare metal and then used lacquer thinner. In the end it came out great.

JUST REMEMBER THAT IT TAKES LIKE 8 DAYS TO CURE. It freaked me out when I did mine, thougth I had some bad paint. Give it a good coat and let it tack up some and spray it again. I only gave mine one cause like I said, thought it was bad. lol
