new engine for my 86 k-20

hey guys. i found this on my local craigslist and was thinking of possibly using it in my 86 k-20 instead of selling and buying a new truck. and for the price i would think that this would be a great buy.
do you guys think that this would be a fairly straight forward swap.

http://spokane.craigslist.org/pts/394304633.html

it would be going into this

thaks steve

with or with out all the emissions and computers. casue if with out then yea the motor will go in just need a different intake for the catty corner bolts in the heads. if computerized then it a bit more work but possible.

Re: new engine for my 86 k-20

Thats a heck of a deal on an 8.1L with a transmission and transfercase! I've never seen one for less than 4000 here, for just the engine itself without any electronics etc.

Those 8.1L engines are absolute monsters, but make sure you hear it cold start to see how bad the piston slap is, and ask if there is any oil consumption. Pull the plugs and make sure they are clean with no signs of oil on them.

They are actually the easiest new engine to swap into these older trucks. They have the bosses for the old style small block engine mounts, and have a crank that is the same length as the old big blocks did, so you can put any neutral balance big block flywheel on no problem.

Basically means they bolt straight in. The only major complication that I've read about while researching the swap is running the exhaust. The big block is pretty wide, and the manifolds basically dump straight into the frame rails. Most folks overcame it by getting custom made headers that dumped the exhaust on the outside of the frame, then ran it back from there. Of course, you will need to deal with the electrical and fuel system challenges that are associated with all the gen III engine swaps, but they are easily covered these days.

You can probally get 1500 back for the transmission and transfercase too

Thats a nice swap. I would go ahead and swap in the Allison and transfer case, not sure if the front shaft drops on the correct side though.

Re: new engine for my 86 k-20

The Allison is a wicked transmission (if that is what the truck has, I've seen them with either), but the t-case does drop on the wrong side. I *think* an NP241 from an 89 - 91 Suburban, K5 or Crewcab will bolt up to replace it though...
