Project "Workhorse"

Hey,
I'm still fairly new to the site. Just thought I would post pictures of my first frame off resto project. It is a 1963 c-10 that I got free just for hauling off. It had a 3spd/454 combo but the motor was taken out. The truck was restored in the mid 80's and looks like it took a joyride through a fence and cornfield. Everything but the front clip is in great condition.

Can't beat that price for sure... After you get all the paint off you will see more of the damage and if you are lucky it won't be to much.. Just noticed it is a Custom Cab.. Even better...

Today I took off the front clip, the front windshield, doors, and stripped most of the interior. Hopefully I will have the cab completely bare and ready for blasting in a week or so. My future plans are to find a 4x4 frame (preferably stock) and drop in a cummin/allison auto combo...but I haven't measured it all just yet.

Cummins/Allison....that will be one wild ride for sure. Just a thought for you if you haven't already gotten the drivetrain ~ one word: (or maybe it's two) School Bus. Around here, and I assume in most states, counties auction off used school buses and they go for next to nothing. I've seen them go for anywhere from $400 to $1,500, but judging by your user name, I guess you may know a thing or two about auctions.
I keep saying "one of these days" I'm gonna take a school bus, remove the body, shorten the frame by bringing up the rear end far enough forward to emiminate two of the three driveshafts that most school buses have, and plop down a neat old 40's to 50's 2 1/2 to 5 ton truck cab. That would make a neat car hauler especially if you get one of the buses with Budd wheels, and bolt on nice Alcoa Aluminum Budds. "Yup, one of these days"

Thanks for the idea. I already have the transmission out of a 1 ton Chevrolet bread truck but I am still looking for a good cummins that has the old style injector pump. The school bus idea is defintely worth looking into...thanks

Not to jack this thread, but what are "Budd" wheels? I have heard them mentioned before but am not sure what they are.

It's actually a brand-name, but it's used in the trucking industry just like everyone calls celophane tape Scotch tape. They're a solid steel wheel like what's on dually pickups. Older trucks and still a lot of school busses use the Dayton (again, the Scotch tape thing) wheels, which have a center 5 spoke hub that stays on the truck, and just the outer rim with no center comes off to mount/dismount tires. You still see them on most dump trucks for some reason. With Budds you can go chrome, aluminum, or put simulators on. But, with the Daytons you can only paint them.

These trucks will accept just about any motor and trans combo you can think to put in them. BBC's go right into the stock mounts with clearance. Cant imagine why a cummins wouldn't fit. the trans tunnel may vary. Definitely a good start tho.
