Three On-The-Tree Problem

First of all, I must say that I am glad that I found this site. The replies and the post that I have read through are great!

I have a problem with rebuilding my column. The two shifter bolts/pins are hitting each other. I replaced the old column with a used one. After taking it apart and cleaning and re-greasing, I was reinstalling and the two shifters want to collide. I have the spacer between the first and second shift arms but the bolts/pins still hit each other. I thought I was careful to keep track of all the parts and the assembly order, but I may have missed something or something was missing on the column I bought.

Any suggestions?

P.S. I have tons of picks from my rework of my '69 Step-side but I am at work and don't have them with me. Will post some later.

Try and get a close-up pic of the parts that are touching.
Someone will be able to point out the issue pretty quickly adn most likely even post up a photo of what it should look like.

Welcome, I don`t have a answer for you but seen where you are from and I live in Buena Vista about 50 miles from roanoke. I also have a 1969 c10 step side, I plan on coming up that way on the 22nd to salem to a show there maybe i will see you there, also this site has help me in so many ways that i cant thank these fellow Chevy truck lovers enough.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the quick help. I found the problem. I tool the column back out and put it side-by-side to the old one. The collumn that I bought has a straight link behind the ****ft engagement lever. My old one has a bent one, so it seems that someone took an automatic at some point and turned it into three on-the-tree.

My plan now is to disassemble both and and build one. I've already found out that the shift cover (inside the cab), is built slightly different but I'll get it to work.

I'll post an update with pics when I'm done.

I am interested in your problem as some of the information submitted may be useful to me as well concerning my C10 Stepside and a "three-on-the-tree" shifting problem. It locks up at times and I am unable to shift to anything until I get out raise the hood and move two "arms" into alignment(probably the wrong term) near the firewall. Obviously something is worn either bushings or the shifter levers. Where can I get the bushings or shifter levers, and parts if that is what is needed? I went to a large local Cheverolet dealer and the parts man made me a photocopy of the whole steering column and parts by an item number (not the identification part number) from an old book there.Help.

It may be out of adjustment. Try adjusting it as shown in this article, http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=215307

It is simple and can be easily done with the column still in the truck.

Orange Truck:

Something else to look at, is the bushings. On the arms, that you have to move aroung, there are two bushing that are supposed to be in the linkage where the rod comes through. It is a rubber bushing and also, has a metal sleeve in it. I had a lot of slack in mine and didn't even realize there was supposed to be rubber in this linkage.

Another wear spot for the shifters is down on the side of the tranny. These linkages also have bushings. You might check these as well.

These are the bushings you need. I think they fit both the upper end and lower (tranny) end.
