Windshield Washer Fix

Small issue compared to most of the probs in the forum, but vexing none the less. I have rebuild kits for the stock washer pumps, but seems like a pain to get to the motor/pump to remove (any helpful hints there), and past pump kit rebuilds were not always successful.
Also am looking at aftermarket replacement pumps (as in LMC and Whitney catalogs) that mount in front of firewall separate from the motor and supposedly are an easy install using connection to existing motor/pump wiring. Any experience and suggestions/preferences there? All assistance will be appreciated. Thanks. CCCC

I've got a universal pump from Kragen, it was simple to wire up.

dont know about the rebuild kits in the past i ust bought the replacement pumps from lmc like said drop the inst cluster and its not too bad to replace the pumps held up well with no problems

I have installed the combined washer jug/pump out of Chevy Caprices. They hold 4 liters of washer fluid (WAY more than factory) & all thats needed to activate it is a simple momentary contact switch. I mount the switch in the 1/2" hole in the bottom of the dash near your left knee. Sooo much better than the factory's sprayer that goes along with the wiper motor with the "kachunk-kachunk-kachunk" sound.

Here is my fix. I bought the jug at the local yard. It's off a little farn job. Anything can work. I wired it up to the factory switch. It works great.



I put the spray nozzeles in hot water on the stove and put vise gripes on them to close them up enough to hold onto the wipers.

Go to the parts store and get a whole new pump, they will probably have to come from the warehouse. It will be made by anco, same as oe. The one lmc sells is an anco pump just usually more than what you can get at the part store. I know oreilly auto parts has them. And as stated above just remove the cluster.

i looked on my laptop here, but i dont have any on this computer - they are on my desktop in Winnipeg. I can say that its attached by 2 bolts to the innerfender near the factory one. The Caprice bottle is curved on the bottom to match the curvature of the innerfender. It fits like it was meant to be there. I ran the hose to a "t" under the dash & wired up the pump to a switch. the pump itself is the same pump as in Andy4639's post.

What year Caprice should I look for at the junkyard?

S10 jug and pump look similar. May be the same or a bit bigger... I plan to bolt mine to the left fender about where the original was and wrap the wire into the existing harness with harness (not sticky) tape.

I just found one at the wrecking yard that had the pump inside the bottle.
Drilled two holes, mounted it with two screws, connected the wires and the hoses- done deal, works perfectly.
Also installed one of putters delay wiper switches- that works great too

I get my washer bottles usually from 91 & up Caprices....

When I bought the truck it was bolted to the right fender? I've seen brackets but had no idea where it belongs. I'd rather move it.

i did a in depth post on this years back, not sure where it went though. its really an easy job. i just use an after market pump. wired it right to the stock switch. works great. im sure i have the photos of where to plug everything in if anyone wants to see..

Stripped the factory unit down to the metal mount bracket


Cut off the plastic mount because it was too wide for the bracket.


Mounted to the bracket with an Adel clamp and connected to factory wiring.

@lawest is mounting on the driver side wiper motor and using the factory mount for the OEM pump?

I have attached a photo from another posting, is this how it looked before you put on the Universal one?

Still working okay?

I like this approach as it is "near" original and not routing wires to a external pump.

I am not the OP but there is only one wiper motor, and that is what the original washer looks like after you remove the plastic cover. Many people that are trying to get their windshield washers working don't think to disconnect all of the hoses and blow through them with an air hose. You have to blow through the nozzles backwards and sometimes you have to use a small stiff wire or torch cleaning tool to get them opened up.

After you get everything clean and fill the water jug you have to prime the pump and hoses. I use a turkey baster to gently fill the hoses and pump while someone keeps pressing on the pump switch to activate the pump.... If the pump diaphragm is bad this won't work, but many times it will.

ah, only one wiper motor - I clearly did not catch on to that. For the record all I hear is a "tick, tick, tick" when I engage for washer pump. Thank you for your information!

The easy way is to buy a junkyard washer jug out of a late model truck are car and install it. Wire it to the original switch and your done. You have to not care if it's correct for the truck also. I have late model jug & pumps in the 71 & the ramp truck.

I like things to work and work well. So adding newer things is OK with me. I want the stuff to make driving the truck a pleasure.

The tick, tick, tick, is normal and means the pump is working. Try priming it.
