I need power steering!!!

I finally procured all the parts (well at least they are on order) for power brakes now on to power steering. Has anyone converted a 67-72 4x4 to power? Im sure it been done but all I can find relates to 2wd. When I look at it I think all I need is a gear box and pump (lines/brackest etc) can it be that easy?

Re: I need power steering!!!

Assuming you are staying with the stock style steering (not crossover) you will want a 4wd power steering box. I got one from a 1978 along with power steering pump and it was an easy upgrade. At some time after that Chevy switched from a flare style fitting to an o-ring metric fitting so you want to try to get the power steering gear box and pump from the same vehicle so you don't need to address that issue.

I can't recall whether I had to change my rag joint so it would bolt up to the power steering box. Hopefully someone else can shed light on that issue.

Also make sure you get the pump for short or long water pump whichever you got. I was lloking at pumps and brackets and pulled one of a 78 ish van cuz I liked it. Then the pump turned out was the long one. Took it off the bracket and exchanged it for a short one.

Re: I need power steering!!!

I definitely agree with what everyone has to say so far. Ideally you could get all the brackets and pulleys off the same donor truck. Mixing and matching brackets and pulleys can be a nightmare. Its probably easier to do it all based on the long water pump system. Basically none of the brackets and pulleys interchange between the long & short water pump setups. Brackets for short pumps are a little harder to find. Good luck.

Re: I need power steering!!!

If you have a 69-72..just get the steering box, pump, brackets, pulleys, etc from the correct truck (make sure it has the right pulley system),and bolt it on.On 67-68s the frame needs modified for a power steering box.

Re: I need power steering!!!

I just finished a power steering/disc brake conversion on my 67, LOVE that power steering, I bought a brake line flaring tool, lines, and a bender, seemed easer than trying to find some company to set me up with the right lines for my application. also if you have a lifted truck, I used front brake hoses for a 1 ton truck, they were a little longer than stock.

Just had my 70 BLAZER done. I found a guy that had a bunch of old chevy trucks and bought everything from him, my dad is a professional mechanic and said it all bolted right up. There is a difference between the 2wd and 4wd gear, I didnt know about the water pump deal. I think he had to shim the pump pulley or something but pretty simple according to him.
