New toy to play with 63 SWB GMC!

Just got back from a long day of towing. Started out doing 85 miles round trip to pick up a customers project then another 150 miles to get this. It is a 63 SWB GMC that I got from an instructor that I saw this week. It was his sons truck since he was 16 now 33 but due to some family things it had to go. I was asked if Inew anyone and it so happens that I did, ME Picked it up for $1500 and it is in very good shape with minimal rust in the door bottoms and kicks, nothing I havent done before. The full fate of this truck is not yet known but the plus side is my wife loves this body style and she already has a finished look for the truck. So being a smart man I guess I do know its fate

What is unknown as of now is exactly what suspension of Nates it will run but it will be low and fast. Thinking about a 6.0L that might get a few hair dryers added to it. Auto for sure with 20's and 22's.

Here is the wifes finished ideas and if is mine as well. Gee that worked out well. I towed it with my 1/2 ton porject Low Buck and it did great. I did 235 miles today and got 12.6MPG.

Thanks for looking,
Kevin

Great score. you stole it. I'd say you got a bunch of "thumbs-up" going down the road with that tow-rig.

Re: New toy to play with 63 SWB GMC!

Well I finished putting the 71 together as a roller with motor and trans so I spent a little bit of time on the 63 so I can get it out of the weather. I will not be starting on this untill I finish up "project Trazer" that just came back from media blasting yesterday. The epoxy is still a bit soft so another day or so and it should be ready to start jambing on it. It is a very cool project for a customer you all will need to check out over in the 69-72 blazer section. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=241695

Ok so back to the 63, I pulled the bed to better fit into my storage side of my shop along with alot of larger tools, benders and cutters I have. I was pleased to not find any rust or damage hiding behind the bed. I did find one thing that I am not sure about, the rear end! I think it might be a Dana 60 but I am not sure, maybe you all can help with the ID. Here are a few pics of castings I found. It looks like it was a bolt in but I am not sure. The WMS to WMS is 62 1/4" what are these trucks stock? If it is a 60 I think I will keep it and just get 5lug axels and disks. This way it will hold up to what ever I throw at it.

I'll tell you what you can do to help the 60-66 crew out. I was working on this but everyone knows my 61 is on the back burner...

60-63 one-piece windows! The windows have to tilt back as they roll down to clear the A-Pillar. Don't let us down man. Take those vent windows out and take a look at how clean it will be I have some ideas if you think you want to go for it.

...and don't worry about what I said before about the GMC hoods. It's only a minor difference (more than just signal shape). You'll see it when you park next to a Chevy. Some prefer it. Those GMC grilles definitely kick A$$ too.

Re: New toy to play with 63 SWB GMC!

I'm here too man....I am a no sleeper too...I do my best thinking when I am in bed staring into the darkness !!!

I have been on for a while....since 1:30.....

Working on a new diff cover/combo watts link center mount for my customers 14-bolt in his '67.....

Should come out pretty nice.

One-Piecers would be nice...

How about a regulator system design out of an Acura....the rear windows??

Their is no reason that I can see to have it tilt like the acura. It should have enough room but will need to go to power windows I think because of the rearward slide required to make it all work.

Re: New toy to play with 63 SWB GMC!

I just thought mabey if you needed more space, the window would start it's downward travel, then tilt forwards into the open space of the door.

But, if there's room, then it's much easier.

My truck is at my shop, and I'm at home, so I can't visualize.

Once you do it...many will follow !!!

Later...

Re: New toy to play with 63 SWB GMC!

So were to start? I am trying to decide were to start this project. Should I start with the frame or the body? The frame would be nice because then as the body gets done I can bolt it on and be done with that step. But the body will be cheap to do (doing it al my self and patch panels are cheap) and my frame/drivetrain will be anything but cheap. When I pull the cab off I will be making a Tip & Flip for the 60-66's so I will have a safe place for the cab and the bed is already on a dolly. So I could due the body and keep it out of the way but that new paint would still be sitting around for some time before the frame is done. What have you guys found to be the best way for you and why? I hope to have about 7K to start this build off with by next week and want to start spending it on parts for one of the two steps I have mentioned.
Thanks for the input.
