Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
Now, depending what you came for, I have a question. While under the truck, (ungracefully) putting in the 2-piece drive shaft, my dad poked under to check my progress. Then, he mentioned that the rear axle didn't look like a GM 10 or 12 bolt. His guess was some sort of Dana.
Curious to know what axle I have. Didn't think to look for the axle #s, will be another 2 weeks til Im back over there. Excuse the craptastic camera phone pic, it was what I had at the time. (pay no attention to the exhaust pipes, their not hooked to anything, hanging by wires) edit: dana 60? http://www.offroaders.com/info/tech-.../axlefacts.htm These trucks had Dana axles? Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
Dana 60 as it may be. Wasn't sure since Dana was with the Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth muscle cars for the most part.
Compared to the GM axles, how strong is it? Last edited by texanidiot25; 12-12-2007 at 10:49 PM. |

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
I'm pretty sure judging by the small axle tubes that it is a Dana 44. If your truck is a 1/2 ton ,that's what it it would be. I have (2) 1/2 tons that came with Dana 44's. If your truck is a 3/4 it would be a Dana 60. All the Dana 60's were 8 lug and had floating rear axles, while the Dana 44's were 6 lug and have semi-floating (meaning it doesn't have the big rear hubs like 3/4 and 1 tons).

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
That is not true. Although very rare, semi-floating 6 lug Dana 60's did exist back then. My 1968 GMC 1/2 ton came from the factory with one. I have only seen very few. This is actually the first coil sprung semi-float Dana 60 I've seen though.
The chitty thing of it is I wiped a few teeth of the ring gear on my Dana 60 about 15 years ago being a punk kid doing a smoke show on main street but I still have it laying around. I'll have to snap some pictures of it. Very rare piece. Being a broke kid at the time I put a D44 in it, which it still has. One these days I'll get that Dana 60 fixed.

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
So it is a Dana 60? It's what I was leaning towards from the the site I found.. Do please post pics of it.
Looking at this list, it was on our trucks as a semi-floating axle: http://77cj.littlekeylime.com/web_rs44.html Last edited by texanidiot25; 12-13-2007 at 06:37 PM. |

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
On a non-Chevy note, one of my roomates just bought an original unmolested '79 Ford F100, with a 300/C6/Dana 44. I thought for sure it would have a 9" until I climbed underneath it and saw a Dana 44. I had no idea Ford used Dana rear axles in their trucks, even that late into the 70's. I wonder if it is some sort of I-6 thing, since I think every other 70's Ford 1/2 ton I've seen has had a 9"....

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
Dana made "All" the front axles for 4wd AMC,IH,GM,FOMOCO,and Chrysler. Many used the rears. The standard rear for GMCs was Dana.If your truck is a 1/2t,I think it is a Dana44.

I have a Dana 60 in my junk, but the cover interchanges with other Dana rears. My cover actually came off a Dodge diesel truck with a Dana 70.

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
Dirty Larry is correct. I pulled a Dana 60 from a 68 GMC about 3 months ago. I thought it was a 44 until I sold it to Tim Christian. You'll know the difference when you pick it up. It also was a 6 lug and had 60 in the casting. It was my first also.

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
I was able to take pictures of it after all. This is the original axle out of my 68 GMC C1500 with a factory 396/TH400, bucket seats, wood bed, tach, A/C. I have owned the truck since I was 15 and smeared a few teath off the ring gear back in the early 90’s. I pulled it apart years ago at my dad’s shop and happen to loose the brake drums and backing plates somewhere along the line. Being broke kid at the time it is been sitting every since. At least I still have the housing and axle shafts.
On the top of the center housing it is stamped 60-2. On the lower right flange it also has a stamp that says 60. The last picture is the carrier that came out of this Dana 60 (Right side) compared to the Dana 44 carrier (left) that came out of the front of my K10 when I swapped in a locker. The D60 is carrier is huge. Once I get all my K10 projects out of the way I can’t wait to fix this ole Dana 60 now we have been talking about. Got to get rid of the drum brakes on the front first!

Re: Take a look at my rear end, tell me what you think
I have 69 CST half ton,396,factory 4-speed truck that came with a Dana-60 with leaf springs. It has the number 60 cast into it .It,s a six lug rear end.The Chevrolet parts book lists a Dana rear end with 396,4speed trucks..I,m sure now ,after reading this forum they must have been offered in other applications.
