Angry Horrible BOG!!!

I have a 1971 short wide that has developed a horrible bog. It runs fine down the highway but if you try to lay rubber it bogs and dies. If you let up on the throttle a little it begins to clear and slowly builds RPM but I don't have any other idea what it could be. I changed carbs, plugs, wires, distributer cap and rotor. It idles fine and starts very easy, but it runs like crap if you hit the gas with any sense of urgency. This problem came from nowhere. SOME PLEASE HELP!!!

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

i would say fuel pump or filter. you say you switched carbs so that counts out the accelerator pump. it could also be slipped timing chain.

Vote #3 for the fuel filter. Had this happen to my first truck when I was 16 and had no clue...

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

what would be a good fuel filter. My truck has an inline fuel filter and mine has been doing that here lately.

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

Whatever fuel filter you get, don't get the cheap glass see through filters. If you have a Q-jet, just get a stock filter. I like the fat metal filters with the seam in the middle of them. Auto Zone has chrome ones. If you don't see it, then just go to the filter section and find a universal fit filter.

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

Check your ignition timing, make sure both the vacuum advance and mechanical advance are working and the right amount. Lake a look at vacuum lines to make sure yo have no leaks or disconnected hoses.

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

There's also the sock on the fuel pick-up in the tank that gets clogged with rust and crud. Check that and any rubber connections on the fuel line that have gotten old and collapse with the suction crated by the fuel pump ahead.

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

Make sure fuel tank is venting properly as well and not creating a vacuum inside.

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

I just laughed out loud!!!!

Possibly a bad signon unit in the tank. I agree this sounds like a fuel delivery issue.

Re: Horrible BOG!!!

Well, I changed the fuel filter, which was very ditry I might add, and tried it again, no luck. I checked to make sure that the vaccum advance was working and it does, no leakes in any of the hoses. I drove the truck with the gas cap off to see if it was pulling a vaccum on the fuel tank, not it either. The only thing I haven't tried is to reset the timing. I don't have a timing light so I'll have to wait until I can get one.
