Re-Routing Ignition Switch
Im just wondering how much work is needed to re-rout the ignition switch. i would like to keep the switch in the origional spot (in the dash) But we are using a new steering column (1988). Is it fairly easy to rerout the wires to the one in the dash? and what can be done to the 1988 steering column to take the switch off so it lookes like it was never there?

Re: Re-Routing Ignition Switch
If you never plug in the one in the column, then there's no reason to reroute anything.
Why not get a van column, 72 - 81/early 82? They look right, have no extra switches, no locking stuff to get in the way, and are cheap and plentifull. |

Re: Re-Routing Ignition Switch
Do those columns have tilt on it? Personaly i want to stay with the Column from 71...but my dad wants it to have tilt...i like the old column with the oldschool steering wheel...The 71 column we have in it now was customized so the column shift was taken off and disengaged.
Ultimatly i want an automatic floor shifter out of a chevelle, But for now it will be a Auto Column shift, with tilt. But i want to put the key switch in the dash where it origionaly was for 1971. So the van column dosnt have a key switch on the column?

Re: Re-Routing Ignition Switch
You can use a van column to do all the things you want. Even if it is an automatic column, you can remove the shifter, grind down the nub that is left and weld in a small part to smooth it out. Then just a little filler and paint and your have a tilt column and can still run the shifter through the floor. Here is a thread that explains it all.
