Pitman arm leak...
Have a leak from the pitman shaft on my gearbox. I've seen a seal kit available from checkauto and was wondering how difficult it would be to r&r the seal??

I thought about doing it myself and when I asked my dad how hard it would be he told me I'd be better of buying one. The seal kits aren't terribly expensive but I think the rebuild is tricky. Maybe someone else can chime in that has done one and tell you for sure. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

They are not too bad... Just keep track of where the preload adjusting nut is on the top of the sector gear cap. It needs to be set back EXACTLY where it is...

pull the box and place it on the bench. remove pitman arm with puller tool. pry out old seal being carefull not to damage the shaft or housing. drive in new seal. re-install box.
there is no reason to disassemble the unit for this seal. unless of course you are curious what's inside and plan to buy a new one. |

I,ve always pulled the sector shaft out. It is easier that way. If you have the steering on center remove the bolts on the cover & tap the shaft out. There is a snap ring, 2 seals, & a spacer between them. Then slide the shaft back in & bolt it down. The adjustment stays the same.
