Carrier bearing Retrofit?

I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with the carrier bearing mount bending or breaking. I started noticing a cluncking sound when I took off from a stop. It sounded like a bad u-joint. When I got under the burb to see what the problem was I found the carrier bearing mount had broken some of the spot welds and was banging on the frame. I only have a stock 305 so there is not alot of horse power. Is this a commen problem and is there a better carrier mount that can work.

I'm going to move this over to the pickup forum where I think you will get a better response.
I also had a carrier bearing support break on me and I found that I had a worn ujoint in the slip joint behind the carrier bearing that would cause the drive line to jerk on accellaration and decellaration. This would cause the drive line to move from side to side putting a stress on the carrier bearing bracket.

Depending on how hard the truck has been driven you may find that some of the rivets wear out. I had a spring perch pull a rivet out (younger brother said he was just driving along... rigggghhht ). Used a drill to clean up the hole, used some grade 8 bolts, and the thing has held solid for 3 years.

Re: Carrier bearing Retrofit?

My son's truck, also a '69, had a warmed-over 350, that would bark the tires easily in 2nd with the TH350. Didn't take long after he got it that he heard the unmistakeable sound of "something gone bad".

Anyway, we pulled the 2-piece driveshaft, and rebuilt it from one end to the other, with a new center bearing/support.

Yeah, it's not unusual, and it ain't necessarily how you drive it. The least aged model of this series is now 36 years old. Things deteriorate over time....I should know. I recently turned 60.

Re: Carrier bearing Retrofit?

I always figured you could just get a heavy duty Pillow Block bearing and stick under there and be done.

Re: Carrier bearing Retrofit?

Thanks for the response. Something I should have mentioned was it wasn't the mount that is riveted to the frame but the metal on the carrier bearing that seporated and ripped. The bearing was only 5 months old and the entire drive shaft was rebuilt at the same time. Is there a better design that puts the bolts on either side of the bearing rather than inline with the driveshaft?

I have one of these from Inland Empire. It was well worth the money and peace of mind it provides. I'm not very nice to my truck sometimes and I can't stand something failing when I'm standing on it...It has been in place for over a year for now with no complaints.

Re: Carrier bearing Retrofit?

Hey man, this same thing happened to me on the first and 2nd carrier bearing i put in my 72 longbed. What i did was got a new bearing from lmc, and took an old tire, cut out some squares and drilled some holes in em, then i put these in between the mount coming from the crossmember and the bearing mount. It has held for the last 8 months, and has worked great. I also got new screws and left them just a little bit long so that they bottomed out with minimal torque, so that the bearing was not so rigidly fastened to the crossmember mount. I think my drive shaft has a little bit of a bend in it, so it tended to woble a bit, so this is most likely my problem, but im not sure what the problem on urs is. I would put the rubber in between, it worked really well for me...
