Another can of worms
While everything was out of the drivetrain I decided to change the fluids in my differentials. Just to make sure I had 4.10's like the PO said I counted the ring & pinons. I have a 3.40 in the back and 4.10 in the front. This may have contributed to the original problem I had with the TC not wanting to stay in 4Hi. Everytime I open up something else its another can of worms. The 4.10 up front looks in better shape than the 3.40 out back but I would rather go with the lower ratio. Had to get this off my chest, no one around my house wants to hear another said story about my truck.

Re: Another can of worms
so the PO wanted better gas millage but didn't want to or didn't know he had to change the front axle too. Sorry to hear. Hope you get it corrected.
My 3/4t came with 4.56 gears, I have a 4.11 rear but not a matching front yet. That will be a future project for me.

Re: Another can of worms
I currently have 4.10 gears. My buddy had an old shortbox Chevy like mine only it was a manual, his would haul butt, the top speed on my old truck is 65. Of course on 38.5's you shouldn't be going 80 anyway I guess. LOL

Re: Another can of worms
The bright side is that a 4.10 rear is cheaper than finding a good front axle. Hope you didn't damage the TC while driving like that.
While your under there make sure the diff vents are open and clear. I had a wasp make a nest in mine and blew the oil through the axle seals because it could not vent the gasses, ruined a $80 set of brake shoes. Last edited by Americanrider; 03-17-2008 at 09:57 PM. |
