POR-15 What do you thing about it?

Has anyone heard anything negative about POR-15? They say it's self leveling and you get a great finish. I am thinking about using it for my frame. How about on steel wheels? I know that the prep work is the most important step but more important, how is the product overall? Thanks, Harry

it is an awesome product... but READ THE DIRECTIONS... you'll find that it is not UV safe, and you'll have to paint over it.

IMO it's a PITA to use & like said above it's not UV protected.
Have you looked at rust bullet?

personally i will only spray it. Its impossible to avoid runs when brushing it on. If it's a driver, who really cares though. Have to use a respirator when spraying.

a respirator doesn't help, you need a fresh air system.
I have never had too much trouble with runs personally.

Re: POR-15 What do you thing about it?

Use rust bullet. It is superior

Rust Shield is less expensive than the bullet, but still way better than POR

Re: POR-15 What do you thing about it?

i've used it and i actully used a 4in paint roller to apply it which actully was a great idea as i had no runs or anything else but i agree with what everyone else has said. the stuff is extreemly picky. oh when i did use it i found that the sample or "trial size" kit they sell will cover the entire bottom of a cab no problem and infact you will have a little extra.

truth be told though i'm not completely sold on the product. it smells like hell, is a pain to clean up, prep is extreemly time consuming and it takes nearly 2 weeks to get the crap off your skin.

You say that like its a bad thing. I'll give you that its aggravating, but it flat out works. I coated a 1/2 of a rusty old piece of metal with it and dropped in a 5 gallon bucket with 1 1/2 of granular chlorine for swimming pools and actually forgot about it. It was in the bucket about 3 weeks before I remembered my little science project and when I pulled it out of the bucket, the side w/o the POR-15 was literally gone. Totally disintegrated. The chlorine turned the POR-15 gray, but the coated metal was fine.

Re: POR-15 What do you thing about it?

I like it, but have not used the other products.
It dries Hard and is impervious to just about everything. I painted the bed floor on my driver to stop the surface rust and did not topcoat it and still looks fresh but it was only a few months ago.

Re: POR-15 What do you thing about it?

none of them will stop rust in real real harsh environments, nor stop them forever, but POR is possibly the best one out there. we compaired it with powdercoat, the eastwood stuff, and one other... can't remember which one... but it lasted longer than any of them.
