Newbie here, just thought I would pass along the website for my latest project. It's a '65 fleetside longbed with a '54 Chrysler 331 Hemi transplant. I had originally planned on buying this for a driver and weekend fixer-upper, but things got a little carried away. I'm planning on putting saddle tanks on it which will break up the long flat panel between the cab and the rear wheels. The only thing I know I'm going to regret is not putting a posi-traction rear end in this thing. But that's always a project for later.

Because nobody else has done it... something different.

Actually, the truck had a swapped out 327 that needed to be rebuilt and I had this engine already done for another project ('62 Studebaker Lark convertible) that I decided at the last minute not to do and sold the car.

Really the only other modification I'm going to do other than the engine/transmission and installing saddle tanks is the seat swap. I found a truck at the GoodGuys 2007 show in Charlotte that used a bench seat out of a mid-90's Chevy truck. I like the looks of it, side bolsters but in a bench. I was able to find two seats in good condition at the upholstery shop I've used.

1995 - 2000 Chevy 1500/2500/3500 truck seat. Silverado's have a different seat.

Thanks, it's been fun so far.

If I had to do it again, I'd look for a 354 or 392 instead of a 331. The 354 & 392 have water ports in the front of the head with a crossover piece that holds a thermostat housing. What I'm going to have to do is mount a remote thermostat housing somewhere and run lines to a port in the inner side of each head.

Be careful what you wish for... there are only really two main old hemi parts vendors (HotHeads and PAW) and they're proud of their parts.

Thanks... one of the vent windows came from your parts stock.

Speaking of parts, I'm thinking of putting a "converted" original radio in the dash... anybody have a real nice radio? I'm going to AutoFair at Lowe's Motor Speedway next weekend and will be looking there as well... I know there are a couple of the conversion guys there.

Thanks. Actually it's supposed to be Chrysler Hemi Orange... not sure what the engine builder used. But the paint is really thin and I'm going to be using POR-15's engine enamel on it.

We stripped the frame the old fashioned/not fun way... pressure washer, oven cleaner and wire wheels/brushes. I wanted to sandblast it like we did with my Studebaker but the other guy didn't think we needed to.

Nice work - did you use por15 to paint the frame as well? Did you coat the por 15 with anything else or did you just leave it as a Por15?

Actually the frame and suspension is painted with the $30/gal. Tractor Supply paint. I had an opened gallon of it around and since I am/was building this as a driver I thought it would be good enough... the rest of the truck will get real paint. I have used POR-15 in the cab an on all of the inner sides of the body panels, I use it straight or cut with a little urethane reducer (or was it enamel reducer???). I did use POR-15 on my Studebaker Hawk frame and it does turn a little milky in color if it sits out in the sun. I love how it flows out when brushed on... most people think it's powder coated. The sun doesn't hurt the product, but it just doesn't look as nice. I have used POR-15's Top Coat as well as spraying over it while it was still tacky with regular automotive paint.

POR-15, for those who have never used it, is a wonderful product to use on freshly sand blasted or surface rusty metal... it will peel right off shiny smooth metal. I've purposely allowed some metal to surface rust just so it would adhere better. Most impressive is no matter how careful you are, you will get it on you... and if you don't get it off immediately you will wear it for at least a week.

I was able to get up to my truck this weekend and do a little work. I decided to keep the heavy-duty style bumper, but modified and we also got some body work done on the doors and hood. Photos can be found in the 04/12/08 and 04/13/08 links.
