Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
Hey guys, I have been a member for awhile, always lurked but seldom posted. I have a truck ( see my screen name) with a 327 and the manual trans, Sm465. I was recently given an Edelbrock Performance manifold,a 650 cfm carb, cam and a set of ceramic headers for my engine. It currently has the stock 2 bbl carb on it and seems to have plenty of pick up with this setup. My question is, would I notice any performance gains by adding this to my truck. I know at freeway speeds the engine is turning higher rpms than I would like, by adding the four bbl would I just be wasting fuel??
I was planning on swapping the SM 465 for a 700R4 to gain the overdrive, should I just wait to bolt these performance goodies on after the new trans goes in?? |

Absolutely put that stuff on, especially if what you have now is stock. You'll definately notice a perfomance gain even if slight. I've always run Holleys but I recently purchased my truck that has an Edelbrock carb with electric choke and it seems to be cool. If you end up not using the set up, let me know, I'm looking for a used/new performer rpm manifold.

havent we been through the "adding new top end parts to a warn bottom end" thing several times before? how many miles does this engine have on it?

Re: Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
I rebuilt the motor approx, 7000 miles ago so that is not a problem. I was just worried that with using the SM465 trans if the 650 carb would just waste fuel. I know that with the two bbl that is on it, I can break the 33" tires loose, do I need much more low end that I would get with the 4 bbl.
Does anyone know the cfm of the two bbl. Rochester that came on it from the factory??

Re: Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
well if it runs fine and you are happy with the power then i wouldent mess with it. and with gas prices the way they are it would just be a waste of fuel and more $ out of your pocket. just my opinion. good luck,
John

Re: Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
I put that set up on my 350 sbc trans am.... gets about 7-10 mpg, and the power is from 2400-5000 rpm, with the auto I can't break the tires loose unless it is wet, the shift from 2nd to 3rd is a different story....

Re: Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
as long as you don't get too crazy with it a 4 barrel carb is actually more fuel efficient. Even at the higher rpms you should lose too much milage due to the fact that the two barrel you have on now is probably not much smaller. The new intake will definitely help with that too. just my .02

Re: Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
The gas mileage should improve with these upgrades. One reason for this is the 4 barrel carb will run off of only the front two barrels under normal acceleration/driving. The primary jets will also be smaller in the 4 barrel than the 2 barrel, therefore improving your mileage. The headers will let the motor breathe better and seeing as to how an engine is basically nothing more than an air pump, the easier it can get air in and out, the more efficient it will be. BTW, if you drive like I do, you can throw all of the mileage increases out the window (i.e. you will be driving it harder to "hear the pipes" and to "listen to the 4 barrel kick in").

Re: Edelbrock goodies, do I put them on?
YES. Install everything including the overdrive tranny and you will have better mpg and better torque/hp than you have now (with good dual exhaust)
just keep your foot out of the secondaries on the 4bbl.
