Well im 17 and have a 1989 Nissan 240SX that crapped out. So I won the battle with my granddad to get the 1971 Cheyenne from him. Just got it this weekend! Im very proud of my rusty truck.
It has over 280,000miles on it and still kicking. Right now it needs a shock bracket welded back on the rear axle. The carb needs tuning also. Well I will have pics sooner or later.

Its not a project, its my daily driver. It is a family truck that has been with us since 1973 and will never leave untill it dies.

Howdy!

Do you have a coil suspension? If so you probably have shock stud mounting plates that are bolted via the U-bolts to the trailing arms. They come off when you pull the nuts off of the U-bolts. You might think about making sure you have good ones, and get some new shock studs to put in those plates instead of screwing around with the welder. Worst case you can get them from someone here, or aftermarket.

The reason I say this is the jackass who used to own my truck welded 1/2" stock steel threaded pegs onto the shock mounts to obviously try to fix the broken stud problem. Too bad the shocks take 5/8" studs instead of 1/2". Oops. Both shocks were destroyed where they mounted to these two points.

If I had clean shock stud plates then all I'd have to do is bolt the shock in. Of course this works the best when you have stock height. If you want to lower it, or the geometry isn't the same any more there are shock relocation kits you can buy that are pretty cheap. Unless you absolutely have to I wouldn't weld anything onto your axles, unless you have leafs, in which this whole converstaion is completely unnecessary.

Have fun with that truck. I got mine when I was 17 and I'm now 31. I don't ever plan on selling it; just keep on modding.
