headlight problem

Not a chevy, but similar truck manufacturing, 1975 |Jeep.......................I am driving to work and the lights flicker.......then go out entirely........I stomp the switch for low beam and they come back........back on Hi and they kick out. drove in with lo and picked up another switch for hi lo on the way home.........changed it....took 5 minutes. checked out to be okay.

This morning get in turn on lights all okay........then back out of driveway and lights out...........same thing all over again.

some people suggest the headlight switch itself can cause this

Any ideas on this????

Re: headlight problem

the head light wires after the dimmer switch are shorting out causing the head light circit breaker to heat and open causing the lights to go off. it cools off and resets and the lights will work for a time till the breaker heats and opens.

You definitely called this one for sure. I replaced the switch for good measure and in a hope that it fell into the diagnosis from friend who was told that the hi beam circuit draws more amps and will trip the circuit where as a lo beam doesn't run as hot.
I went along with it because i didn't feel like tracing down the unknown wire short in freezing weather. outside.
I gambled the simple switch change would get it..............at the same time in the back of my mind my gut instinct agreed with your diagnosis.
Oh well.
All fixed and lotsa spare parts to boot!!!!

Re: headlight problem

I've had the wires leading to the dimmer switch get corroded and cause an open circuit.

Re: headlight problem

you can see the spot on the fenderwell where the wires had rubbed for the last 33 years and rubbed through the hi beam wire. 10 cents worth of black tape and the dailuy is back on the road.. Maybe the spare parts will fit my Chevy???
