Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
When I restored my 71 I replaced all of the marks that I found on the truck. Th color code 460 was in a diagonal to the right under the brake booster, the bucket seat code A50 was on the core support on the driver's side, the model and vin were across the top of the firewall starting roughly at the A/C box and continuing across above the wiring gutter. Under the drivers seat was the number 118 in letters roughly 16 inches tall and in two locations on the frame were the model number 10734. I also replaced the id marks on the front springs, a white band near the bottom coil and the id marks that were found on the end of the hood springs for orientation to the front. The original jack had inspection marks on the rivets that hold the base together. On my 72 there were marks just under the cowl panel, paint code on firewall as was model but no vin, model on rear most frame crossmember and the name john written upside down on the gas tank all of which will remain or returned. There was also the tag for the orginal dash pad under it when I removed it and I replaced it when the new pad went back on- It had the inspector's three initials and a check mark on it in black pen. I recently parted a 72 Custom deluxe that still had the original carpet label still stapled to the rear of the carpet- carpet was made by the stevens company in Tenn. someone said they were still in business. Pretty cool to find this stuff- I believe the research and discovey of this type of stuff is the coolest part of these trucks as it gives you the history of the vehicle- I still wonder what made john write his name on the gas tank.

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
Here is what is written on my firewall/cowl.
The last pic looks like the numbers were engraved. I'm sure it hasn't been disturbed. It all came with the same patina.

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
Mine were lost when it was repainted by the PO....personally I would like to have had them it's a little snapshot of a moment in time when the truck was on the line and all sparkling and new. Also it's kind of funny to think that brand new vehicles that would be in showrooms around the country were scribbled on by whoever, no worries about neatness or maybe picking the guy with the best handwriting to do this, or even put it in a spot where it would'nt be seen....no they just put it in plain sight as to be seen every time you popped the hood.

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
Uncle,I love that OEM paint, too. It just doesn`t get any better than that.
Does anyone know about what the markings are all about?I mean, not all trucks had them. So,I have a theory.I think these are trucks that were sidelined waiting for a particular component and the marks are about what it`s waiting for or otherwise identifying important specs. That`s my guess.

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
While tearing down the blazer I found some numbers on the top of the transfercase. It was neat, it was protected by about 30 years of dirt and oil.

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
I`ve had more original paint trucks w/o the markings than with, most didn`t.My theory is the cab got painted to order, then something else held up the build.Just like GM might substitute a part that throws us off today.
My`72 K2500 has 2wd brakes on the rear and it`s all original.I ordered my`92 K3500 that was supposed to take 6 weeks. But,I wanted a fleet color. They said I could have it,but I had to wait for at least 5 other trucks in that color were ordered(Woodland Green). That took 6 weeks and the process began.I was told it was due for completion several times only to be told it was back off the schedule.I knew I was ordering a not so common combination of options for a`92.I ordered it in Feb.and recieved it in June.I pictured the truck collecting dust in a corner several times.I`m sure this happened alot back when you had so many choices of options/combinations back in the late`60s/early`70s.

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
Now I just need to figure out what 441 means! The paint code is 551 on the SPID. White/Med. Bronze. Could 441 be the color Med. Bronze?

Re: Firewall Markings Any Photos???
What I heard is that they had one guy at each plant (in the cases of the better handwriting, it was a woman...or .....).
My friend's Uncle Jim wrote me that when they were sitting around the coffee machine (10 cents) in the employee's break room at the GM plants, they each jotted down numbers with some letter association. Depending on the general mood, the letters stood for different things. "BE 4 CS 195" meant : "Bad Example By The Chicken S%$t One Manager on Line 5". Stuff like that. They laughed that, possibly, forty years later, a bunch of owners would be trying to figure the word puzzle out. When they got really nasty, they'd send someone over to the Corvette plant with chalk. They told each other that the uppity guys that showed these cars in forty or fifty years would be paying waaaay too much for them. But they'd REALLY be paying too much if they had the original chalk marks. Knee slapping all around. Really. I heard it on the internet.
