swapped 73-87 discs, wheels tilted!

I recently removed my 6 lug drum brakes and replaced them with 5 lug discs from an 84 gmc parts truck. I kept all the original parts on my 1970 (crossmember, upper and lower A arms, steering linkages, tie rods, etc) EXCEPT for new 73-87 upper/lower ball joints and of course the 73-87 spindle/disc. I bolted the wheels on to push the truck out and noticed the wheels are tilted in a lot. The top of the wheels need to be pulled in. I notced there are probably 3/4" of shims behind each of the upper A arms, can I just start removing a few of those until the wheels are straight? Ive been told that I should use inner/out tie rods and/or drag link from the 73-87 truck. Are these parts any different? To all you who have done this setup before, have you run into this problem with the camber of the wheels? How'd you fix it?
