Bought a New Project Yesterday - UPDATED

i bought me a new project yesterday off craigslist. i was kind of leary about the price and photos i seen. but went and looked at it and the truck is pretty solid. the rust is surface rust and will come off with a blasting. i used a little sand paper to see how bad it was, it took very little effort to get it off.

the guy i bought it from only bought the truck for the chrome grill and chrome front bumper. he said the guy had it blasted and then used the wrong primer and then let it set outside.

the rocker panels and cab corners are perfect. will only need to do a little welding on the floor on both sides. no rust on door bottoms, the inner fenders and radiator support have no rust through spots anywhere, even the known prone areas, ie, under the battery box and front of inner fenders.

it will need cab supports front and back.

i have an 86 suburban i am going to use for some parts. the motor and tranny, the front suspension(for the disk brakes), the brake booster, and anything else i can use.

plan on tubing the back, moving the gas tank to rear of bed, boxing in frame, and some other tricks i am going to do.

will keep everyone posted on project and process.

here are a few pics of the truck.

OH YEAH, I PAID $450 FOR THE TRUCK. AND IT WAS IN THE TOWN I LIVE IN, ABOUT 5 MILES FROM THE HOUSE.

Wish that I could have found a cab like that. But, now that I think about it I wouldn't have learned all of the new cuss words since I've been trying to get all of this after market sheet metal to line up.

Re: Bought a New Project Yesterday

will post some updated photos later today. have everything tore down on it. working on the frame right now. wife sanded the hood yesterday, and the rust isn't that bad. did find a few more things that i will need to fix on the cab, but it is no big deal.
i was worried about the radiator support being rusted out and not getting the bolts and nuts loose, but all the bolts and nuts came loose very easily and there is absolutly no rust in the radiator support, inner fenders at all.

so far i am very pleased with this purchase. it was definitely a great find.

Smile Re: Bought a New Project Yesterday

heres some pics of the shape that it is in. rust in the driver side floor and kick panel, a little on the rocker panel, and the cab corners and cab supports will need replaced. those are no biggies.
i have 4 boxes of parts that came with the truck and i don't know what all is in them, yet.

the pics are of what my wife and i did all day saturday.

the frame is in our garage being picked apart. the front mount that the trailing arms are mounted to is coming out, and i am making my own design tubular cross brace. box in frame. going to 4-link it with coilovers on the rear. have been debating on ford rearend or use the stock rearend with new 5 lug axles. have found a 60in. ford 9 inch with posi about an hour from the house for $75. plans are to build my own tubular upper and lower control arms with coilover setup. not going to be a asphalt scraper but will be low.

plans are to tub bed, put 14in wide wheels and tires and semi pro street it.

not sure what i am going to do with interior yet but i have plenty of time to think of some ideas

this site is great, you get a lot of ideas from other fellow truck builders, and if you have a question you can usually get an answer in a short amount of time.

will be trying to keep my post up to date with all changes i plan on doing. wont have much time to work on it this weekend, have vacation plans and will be gone from thurday night till sunday evening or monday evening.
