Help
I am having trouble putting a 283 in my 65 with a 3 speed tranny I get the motor almost all the way in but cannot get it to slide all the way against the bell housing. I have a new flywheel, clutch disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bearing. I tried using longer bolts to draw it in but it still does not go all the way in. The truck used to have a 230 in it the clutch kit and fly wheel where ordered for a 283. Is ther a differenc in the pressure plate that is holding me up or should I look for a different problem? Did you check to see if the Pilot bearing fit on the input shaft? Sometimes they give you the wrong one. Or you can try turning the output shaft and see if that is not lined up or the clutch disc is not lined up properly. I acually have an output shaft from a VW Bug in my tool box I used to use for clutch lineup.. Make sure you are using the proper line up tool..

Don't try forcing it, you'll soon find out the failure strength of the bell housing bolt flanges!
Usually a misalignment of the clutch disc. Pretty much have to have the alignment perfect and the pilot bushing must be correctly sized. When it's all in conjunction, it should slide right in. If you're sure it's set up, slip it in gear and turn the driveshaft as you mate the parts. Sometimes a bit of a rotation will locate the splines and make it slip in. Dan

I think it's the clutch disc snagging you. Any chance that the splines on the input shaft don't match the clutch disc?

The splines on the clutch disc and the trans both have the same splines 10 splines 1 1/8 shaft I checked the pilot bearing on the pilot shaft prior to installation I used the proper clutch alignment tool and when I put it in and turn the flywheel with the truck in gear the rear wheels turn I know that the splines are engaged I think my problem is with the pilot shaft not being at just the right angle I will try removing the tranny assembling the 2 pieces out of the truck and see if it will go together but first I will remove the clutch setup and try to see what is binding me up. Hey Dennis, you may well be right about the alignment. I've had this problem before, and you're correct that it's easier to assemble the two pieces out of the truck and then lower them in as a unit.

It seems that I have this same problem every time I put a new mill in my truck. Every time it is overcome by getting into the engine compartment and simply aligning the motor side-to-side, then lifting the rear, and POP! in she goes!

If your dropping the motor in, then it is either a mis-alignment of the disc or just the angle of the transmissions input shaft. Try jacking the front of the trans up as high as it can go and then slipping the engine in, might solve your problem.
Also, run your finger along the edge of the clutch disc and the pressure plate to see if they are inline with each-other. Sometimes when your bolting on the pressure plate the disc slips a little while still on the alignment tool. |

I've found that using some 1/2" all-thread as an alignment dowel does wonders for transmission installs (tranny to bell-housing).
Just don't make them too long, you'll never get them off because of clearance issues. Don't ask me how I know this |

I got them together. I had to pull the trans out and put it in as a unit but they are bolted together. I just need to adjust the position a little bit to get the mounting bolts in but the motor and transmission are bolted together.
