Question Newbie with lift and drivetrain questions...

Hey,

I bought a '84 jimmy full size. It had a 6.2 diesel but now it's a 305 with a 4 speed tranny with overdrive. No idea on the transfer case. The truck sits on 35's. The transfer case grinds now, tranny slips. I was looking for a good set up to run 38's. I 'm going to rebuild the 305, I have no idea on mods for it, it has a edelbroke 650 carb and that's about it. So any input on that would be great! lol. For the tranny, I think it might be a 700r?, going to rebuild, put in a shift kit and tranny cooler. The transfer case well... I have no idea lol. Re-gear to 4.56?. Also I'm going to get new drive shafts. So... Any input on anything I mentioned would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah... The steering grinds too, looks to be just a gear box connected to the pitman arm. So that would need to be upgraded too.

Thanks,
JR

Re: Newbie with lift and drivetrain questions...

Trans should be a 700R4,transfercase should be a New Process 208. I would ditch the 305 and find a 350...

yeap ditch the 305 and and get a 350
it'll make life soo much easier with 38's
but why 38's why not 36's??
alot less work to fit those in. . .
but if you go that big i desperatley reccomend radials they make the world of difference driving on pavement

Yep I totally agree get a good 350 SB setup and if you drive on pavement that much defiantly check out radials for sure. I am looking at this same kind of setup on my '81 K5 Blazer getting it hooked up with 3/4 ton axles and I want about 6-8" of lift and 36"-38" swampers. I will let you know what I end up doing.

Re: Newbie with lift and drivetrain questions...

well i have mine set up with the skyjacker 6 in,with a 2in t case drop, axels als have the angled block so my driveshafts line up correctly
and i had mickey t 38's but they rubbed on my shocks and started eating up my fenders just too big for a 6in, so i sold those and bought a set of Procomp x-mudterrains, their tire size measures to be 37in tall, the fit better, i also (reluctantly) went skinnier with a 12.5 in deep tire instead of the 15.50's
now there is no difference really in what they felt like in the mud both feel f-ing great mudding, i feel the procomps "float" less when at 45-70 mph
also with the 37's i can put them into the tirewell while mudding without destroying my trim
my next set will be the 36.5 in tall procomps
mainly because they are still huge i can bury then even farther in the wheel wells (if i ever do a trail drive) but the simple fact that 1 inch is 80 dollars cheaper per tire makes me want them more
grrrr
welll if you want pictures i'll take specifics for you so you can see what it looks like and email them to you

Re: Newbie with lift and drivetrain questions...

Well after thinking about it I'm going with 36''. I'm just going to rebuild the 305. What kind of hp can they make with a couple of mods? The suspension under the truck is pretty much blocks lifting the springs off the axle. Any idea on a good set-up? Also putting a shift kit in the 700r4 .
