Legal exhaust?

Ok so I recently got a fix it ticket for not having a muffler. I have glasspacks on there but I dont think they are considered a muffler. So my question is what is a sound legal muffler that the state of california will except without completly killing the flow of my exhaust? I have to have the exhaust approved by some official I guess and I dont really know what they are looking for or if it has to be stock.

Re: Legal exhaust?

Welcome to the board.I used to be a regular customer of the sound police back when I was a "young rebel"up in Berkeley. If I remember correctly you just go to the inspection station and rev the motor a couple times and the cop looks at a decibel meter and if it is quiet enough he signs it off. Then when I got around the corner I used to stop and pull out all the rolled-up chicken wire that I had rammed up the pipe, and be on my noisy rebellious way.
You could try that. If it fails you just have to try something else and go back until you pass IIRC.

Re: Legal exhaust?

Make it like it is supposed to be. Get it checked and switch back afterwards.
A friend of mine has a straight through pipe and he just put the housing from a muffler around it. The germans just want to see if you have a muffler. If it is not rusting, itīs fine over here. The germans donīt like it when they see the red glasspacks.

Oh, yeah, Welcome to the board.

Re: Legal exhaust?

There summit brand glasspacks so they just look like a larger diameter peice of tubing(which they basically are). I had considered just taking it to a muffler shop and having a quiet set of pipes made from the long tubes back that I could switch the set back and forth when neccesary. Whats a muffler that will be quiet enough? I really dont wanna spend alot of money either.

O and thanks for the welcomes guys! Wish I would have found this site a long time ago.

Re: Legal exhaust?

Just use clamps on the pipes instead of welds so you can switch them out easily. That what one of my friends does in his nova with dual 3" pipes.

Re: Legal exhaust?

Did the officer use a Db meter, or was it just his opinion?
I would go to said place and have it checked out before spending a dime. Once you know where you stand, you'll know if you need to spend any money at all... or just need to get some glass packs that are a few inches longer.

Re: Legal exhaust?

I went buy him at 5,000 rpm so it was pretty damn loud and he just assumed it didnt have a muffler. He didnt test it or even look under the truck. Good thing he didnt know that it has flame throwers

I agree with what the others have said here... I just wanted to let you know that few things will kill the flow of your exhaust better than 'packs. They sound great, but dont flow very well at all.

Re: Legal exhaust?

Ahhh Pleasanton, is that where you got writen up? Those officers can be pretty anal. In Ca. there is no visual inspection that I am aware of on our "vintage" rigs. Somehow you need to temporarly fix the loudness and take it to the PD station for a DB test. Just watch out for the same officer if you put it back the way you had it.

Re: Legal exhaust?

Whats wrong with a nice, well designed exhaust with mandrel bends, clean welds and some Borla or magnaflow (Flowmaster if on a budget) mufflers ?

It will sound strong, not too obnoxious and will likely give you more power down low than straight pipes

Re: Legal exhaust?

Yeah good old pleasanton. Where are you located Jerry Jones?

I have nothing against mufflers or nice exhaust systems, I just havent had the extra cash to pay for a nice system. I got the glass packs for free and when I bought my truck the PO was runnin straight headers.
