need some advice

Iam stuck at the moment on my truck. I want to put a 5 speed in my 71 but i have run in to a few snags. first i came across a camaro t5 and changed out the tail housing for a s-10 housing which went smooth until i noticed the speedo is about 1 to 2 inches off. So i have been searching and know i can use a s-10 t5 (which i have 3 ) but i dont know how much trouble it is goin to be. I have been looking at a tko but i dont want to blow all my money on it.

So here is my question, What other options do i have ? I have checked out nv 3500 5 speeds but i dont know how hard it would be to attach the clutch cylinder to the brake pedal. would do you guys think ? i am trying to get it running again so i can go to a cruise in branson coming up soon and its a lil stressful. Thanks guys

PM board member Brad about it. He has 5 speed in his truck and could probably steer you in the right direction.

Ok Justin, go to www.inliners.org then go to 'Tech Tips' on the LHS. Then click on 'T-5 tranny page', then scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the 'Camaro Hybrid' link. I think that'll help your situation out. It describes how to move the speedo gear on the main shaft.

As far as using an S-10 trans- don't. The gear ratio isn't very street friendly and you'll have to do several mods as well. My first foray into the T-5 was using an S-10 trans and decided it would be MUCH easier and better to go the Camaro route. However, I had/have bucket seats.

Hopefully that helps. Btw, I just blew up my '86 Camaro trans on Monday and don't know why yet. I just got a replacement tonight so I just need to install it.

thanks brad or helpful tips! i will check that out and have you heard how well a nv3500 works? also as far as cross members options or the t5 how much do i need to take out on my auto cross member? would i be better off with a custom piece ?

The NV3500 is a great tranny. You can't speed shift it like you can a T-5, but it's no slouch either. I had one in a '91 4x4 S-10 and loved that truck. I never had a problem with the transmission.

I had a custom crossmember fabbed up at a local exhaust shop. I used the original Camaro rear mount and the guy did a fantastic job at making it all fit. I'll try to take pics, but won't be for a week or so.

I just put a nv4500 in my 67 1/2 ton it went real nice I started with a sm465 granny tranny I took the linkage out and drilled a hole for the master cylinder and had a hose made for the hydraulic clutch

mekdad how did you mount the master cylinder for the clutch ? i have one but its from a s10 and i dont think its long enough to work. Thanks guys this has helped me out a ton!

I mounted it to the fire wall right by the brake booster close fit and made a new rod from the pedal to the master I drilled and tap a new hole in the clutch pedal. the master i used came out of a 1993 full size

I put an NV3500 in mine also. The master cylinder for the clutch you have to be a little creative to get it behind a power brake booster. Other than that the install was a breeze. I got mine from a early 90's Silverado and everything was a direct bolt in. I used the original crossmember from my 69 and the drive shaft from the Siverado. I just had to buy a conversion U joint. I haven't got the speedo worked out yet, but I know companies make mech. to Elec. conversion units. Also hooking to clutch cylinder to the brake pedal may make it a little hard to drive.LOL
