Won't Stay Running
I have a '67 Chevy pickup with a straight 6 out of an '81. Had problems with it running for 11 seconds, then dying. Bought new distributor and wires, and gave it pretty much a basic tune-up, still has same problem. Just need help figuring out what could be causing this, and if anyone knows how to fix it.

Re: Won't Stay Running
Ive had vehicles with fuel problems, such as plugged filter or stuck float that limits how much feul can get in so she runs till the bowl is empty then stalls .Then when bowl has a chance to fill again she runs again then stalls. When you shut it off theres still some residual fuel presure. On my 69 nova with an inline 6 the needle seat actually treaded out and held the float in a almost closed position at the bottem of the bowl. Just a thought if you already changed the electrical stuff.

Re: Won't Stay Running
If you don't have luck with the fuel thing try checking the ignition module.I am assuming you have the HEI from the 81?You might also check to see if it was wired without the fuseable link.Check to see that while running the voltage at the distributor does not drop to between 7-9 volts.
BTW you can remove the ignition module and have it tested at your local APS.

Re: Won't Stay Running
Some questions and couple of things need to be checked.
1. When it runs, how long does it run (seconds or minutes)? 2. Does it run smooth? 3. Immediately after it stops running, does it still have spark? 4. And if so, is it getting fuel? (may have to have the breather off to see in the throat and manually activate the throttle link.) Fuel and spark is the primary thing it needs as was mentioned. There's other things that it needs to run right and to stay running but that's where it all begins. |
