truck starting fine yesterday-now, nothing
Hi guys. Moved from TX to CA and had my truck transported and then stored for the past week at my pop's house with the battery disconnected. We connected it back up 2 days ago and it's been starting "ok" (more on this in a sec) and then this morning, nothing. it's like the battery's dead.
Ok, so when I say it's been starting "ok" I mean that it cranks most of the time, with a seemingly more frequent "clicking" where I'd turn the ignition and the truck would click. I'd have to repeat this several times in some cases until it cranked and the truck would start. Anyone have any suggestions? Bad Battery? Starter? |

Sounds like the starter solenoid going out. You can replace it or, there's a copper disc inside it that wears out and gets pitted just like a points distributor. Flip that copper disc over and it should start right up.

I think I would agree with Brad but also take "all" (meaning both ends, big and small" of the battery cables off and clean the cables, bolts, washers, and nuts and re-assemble. LockDoc

Check the voltage as well, the clicking can happen when the Batt is below the 12-14v.

Re: truck starting fine yesterday-now, nothing
agree with 70rs/ss - take the battery to a garage (not Autozone) and ask them to put it on a charger and load test it - it will only take an hour or so...
My Impala and my trucks have done this before - battery just got too low and the starter would click - but wouldn't turn over...enough battery for lights, wipers, etc. - but just not enough juice for it to catch. |

Re: truck starting fine yesterday-now, nothing
I did. It turned out (At least I thought at the time) that the battery was dead. I purchased a battery, thinking that it was the problem (it had a car battery with ~500 cranking amps). But now the new heavier duty battery is dead, so I'm gonna try replacing the alternator and voltage regulator.....other than that, I'm gonna have to take it to a mechanic ( I hope not)...
Any easy "do-it-yourself" suggestions? |

Re: truck starting fine yesterday-now, nothing
So it turns out I've been in "freak out" mode so long I've overreacted once again (4 years of being "creative" in my finances from school); it was the alternator (and I changed the regulator too) to the grand total of $80 in parts.....
Thanks all for humoring me Last edited by elektrik; 07-28-2008 at 10:35 PM. |
