Starter questions
A few pics to start of the starter I removed.
SBC 350 and powerglide tranny. Teeth on flywheel look undamaged. Starter sound was spind and grind, followed by just spin, followed by dead battery. The only two cable attached were the main +12V lead and a black (could be red, dunno, greasy) up into the wiring harness. So the questions: 1) That doesnt appear stock, correct? Looks far newer than 1970 to me. Made in Mexico, too 2) Is that the CORRECT starter? Not period/numbers matching, but is it the right part? 3) People were mentioning shimming on some starters.. I didnt see anything of the sort on this. 4) Am I supposed to have a third cable on the other terminal? Or is this a newer starter retrofitted to my truck? 5) 158 or 168 tooth flywheel for a powerglide? Anyone know? HALP. I want to go to the store and have this tested and buy a battery charger in the next few hours and need some answers first. Last edited by chrislehr; 07-10-2008 at 11:24 AM. |

Re: Starter questions
If you have HEI it would only have the 2 wires. If you have points there would be a 3rd wire for starting. Shims are just thin strips of metal that go between the block and the starter. That starter looks correct to me.
