Window handles are ridiculous

I am finishing up my window regulator instalation and I can't believe how little spline engagement that there is on the window crank handles . The splines are considerably longer but only about 1/8 of an inch actualy engages. Are there improved aftermarket versions? Or is this the name of the game? Seems like a real design flaw.
I actualy thought about grinding back the "point" of the regulator shaft to allow more engagement and drilling and tapping for a small flat head srew to hod the handles on, this of course would put the handle on farther and screw up the spacing for the estuchion behind the handle. ... I am also pretty sure that regulator shaft is probably harder than the hubs of h*** .................has anyone else come up with an improved window crank or some backyard method to improve this situation?
Thanks once again.

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

You're all probably right......................I think my situation is an old wore out hndle that has some of the splines stripped away.so that if it isn't pushed in to the extreme it slips out and loses engagement. The clip no longer holds it on enough to keep it engaged. I have a selection of newer handles in my stash to try and will probably be okay using some stuff that is in a little better condition ( I hope). I am considering new handles if it doesn't work.

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

I bought some run of mill HELP! replacement GM handles for my '69. Although they are 100% correct, they look close enough that 99% of the people wouldn''t know the difference and they look great in the truck. I think they set me back $14 for the pair. They stock them at Autozone, Advance, O Riellys and NAPA.

I believe that aftrmarket handle might be wjhat i have as the one with the short splines has that "M" molded into the back of the handle.
I also looked at my old regulators and they are just like the one in my right door that Brothers sold me...................after digging up some other handles.i am good to go.

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

Are you running later door panels with early regulators? As there is a difference or maybe I read it wrong?

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

Just do what my PO did, take a piece of round stock bend a loop in the end, slip it over regulator and braze it on. Same with the door handle. Works really good until you got to fix something or want to put the right handles on.

early doors and early regs. the splines in the pot metal handles are the weak link. The one I was using kept slipping out, mainly because it had been abused before on the old regulator that was jammed tight. The splines are minimal but sufficient if everything is in good working order and the handles slots where the clips go aren't worn.

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

before putting the new handles on there, remove the door panel, and clean everything down real good with brake clean. At lears one can per side most likely. Once it is all dried up (compressed air helps if you got it, otherwise, 1/2 hr in the sun will do the trick) then spray everything that moves with spray grease.

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

I will call this: "The Long and Short of it!"

The pictures tell the story...............I am trying to send pictures to Brothers................I believe I havthe wrong regulator installed in that right door and i amk D***ED if I am going to tear everything out to change it. I found another handle with way longer splines that fits this side.what is up here.. Is this short spline regulator for a 72? and the handle with the long splines in it is also from a 72?

I realy do NOT want to remove this.......I have all of my new seals installed now and i don't want to think of the damage.

Re: Window handles are ridiculous

by the way, that handle on the left has almost new looking splines in it, it is not stripped like it might appear.it is just half the length of the one on the right.
