C-10 Frame Cleaning???

I am cleaning my frame this week so I can paint with POR-15 next weekend. I have wire wheels. Is there any other ways to clean up the frame.... I need manual ways because I do not have access to soda blasting.... I do have a power washer...

oven cleaner and the power washer ... cover your eyes and all exposed skin when rinsing the oven cleaner off. buy the cheap stuff from Dollar General / Wal Mart / K-Mart ... the cheaper the better.

These are suggestions of what I have done in the past:

* Spray degreaser all over it
* Pressure clean the heck out of it
* Paint thinner all over it
* You could get your self a sandblaster,facemask & sandblast it right on the stands it is on as an alternative. Seen a guy doing it righ on his front yard...

Repeat as neccesary!!! this is what I have done....

I saw a sandblasting attachment for you power washer that was supposed to work really well.

I didn't see that until after I had sandblasted my frame. It took me waaaayyyy too long to blast mine, and it was very dirty. With the power washer/sandblaster the water keeps all of the sand/dirt out of the air.

I don't remember who sells this setup though.

You might check with your local yellow pages. I can have a frame hot-tanked at a local Galvanizing company for $150, that includes the galvanizing.

Guys I just used two cans of oven cleaner and the frame is clean. Yes it burns if it gets on your skin but my frame is really clean... it only took about a hour... This stuff rocks. I also had a wire brush out for the heavy areas... I spent $2.00 at the 99 cent store!

I took a putty knife and knocked off the built up grease, then sprayed the stuff on in the sun, let it sit for 45 or so min, and blasted it. I would say 80% of the paint came off, and pretty much all of the grease.
Now... being you are in a very environmently aware area... you'll want to clean up your mess. The grease and oven cleaner on the pavement will not only stain, but it will p!ss off the polution cops.

Cheap stuff;
(ex wife gave it to me, 3/4 full, cost, NOTHING!)

Then I scrubbed it, sanded the rest of the stuff off, scuffed, cleaned and POR'd the front 1/2 of the frame

How does the oven cleaner work on rust? Or what does work to remove rust short of sandblasting?

A good gas powered pressure washer is very handy and works ok on frames. Next time I am going to rent a commercial style with 3500-4000 psi. Those WILL remove the rust down to the metal.

Someone mentioned the sand blasting attachement for your powerwash, I strongly recommend it. I used simple Green and it worked great. I did take a putty knife and scrap the really thick stuff. After that I took a couple 3m wheels and put the final touches and it came out great.

You know I found when working with oven cleaner the longer you let it sit on the frame the best it works and even better on a hot day

Scrape all of the gunk off, simple green and pressure wash the rest off, pressure washer with the sandblaster attatchment. I personally don't like the idea of spraying oven cleaner on, rinsing it off with dogs and kids around the house. It's not very good for the grass either.

Students: Basic Chemistry class ala Truck Forum

Not to be a smart*ss, and I'm not a chemist, but one of the classes I DIDN'T sleep thru was high school chemistry. Because it was interesting, the way the guy taught it. Our teacher was into practical stuff - not just all about memorizing formulas. He taught about WHY stuff worked the way it does. So here goes:

Oven cleaner = "lye" --- Potassium or Sodium Hydroxide

That's why it's kinda-sorta bad for the kids, the dogs, grass, concrete & the environment in general. And also why it kinda itches or burns when it gets on your skin (it's a chemical burn -- eating it up & dissolving it .....). Real bad for your eyes, etc. That's why the warning labels on the cans are pretty serious-sounding.

Lye + grease or oil + heat, & reaction time = "soap"

(that's how grandma made lye-soap -- hog lard + lye & boil it & stir it then let what came to the top of the kettle cool & harden -- poof: gotchyer not so instant, & not so mild on the skin soap).

That's how soap is made, still today. They just add a bunch of other cr*p to it to make it smell nice & be milder on your skin.

Yep - the reaction becomes more complete, the longer time it sits.

& Yep again, the hotter it is, the faster the reaction goes --- 10 degrees centigrade increase doubles the reaction speed.
