Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

Is it possible to convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt?

Does anyone have advice or instructions on the process?

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

sure, grind off the parts and add some JB weld.. then smooth it, add a little filler, sand and paint.

Or spend $400+ for a new tilt...

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

If you are thinking of a tilt with a shifter on it for a (3) speed then probably not. Converting it to a column for the manual floor shift can be done.

Which one are you thinking of wanting to do?

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

Here is a manual tilt for sale. It's not mine I'm just using the pictures that others posted.

Here are some pictures of a auto tilt.

See the differances in them. The top is a easy fix body filler or weld it up and smooth it out. The bottom can be left as is or cut it all off.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

YES
You don't even have to cut the bottom part off if you don't want to. I bet you could find someone who would trade you for it if you wanted to. The top part could be fixed very easy if you can weld or have someone do it for you are just leave it alone in cae you ever went back to a Auto.
I just took mine out and painted it last week.

It is a manual shift also.

There was a website that made a collar for it, not sure that it would look that good though

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

Check this out on doing a tilt.

Found this on E bay.
Doing a tilt wheel is cheap.

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

I was kinda thinking the same thing Andy, see I current dont have a tilt column of any kind. It seems that it is easier to find an auto tilt vs. the floor shift tilt, so thats when I started looking into modifying an auto tilt.

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

I understand completely. Get a 78 van tilt and your set. You will have the bigger diameter shaft plus they are cheap compared to a 67-72 tilt. Follow the link I posted and your good to go.

See thats what I love about this site, we all have that same passion about these old trucks. The way everyone interacts with each other as if they were all old friends.

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

I am using a van tilt and modifying it...

I just got luck enough to find a board member selling all the needed parts from a manual tilt to convert it.

Re: Convert an auto tilt to a manual tilt

I used a van tilt from a middle 70's. Easy install. Hardest part was the pins in the lower shaft had to be taken out to shorten it.
