Trying to decode GMC VIN

Hey guys, new to this.

Trying to decode the VIN on an old GMC pickup I have in the field.

VIN: CE10DPB38880

It has the wood slates in the floor of the bed?

chrome grill, 4 headlights, 4 speed tranny on the floor.



Don't know just what I have.

looks like a 2 wheel drive, v8, 1/2 ton, fleetside, P... unknown build plant??? 1970 GMC.

This is a V8 from the factory, one mechanic told me it had a 4 speed muncie tranny from the factory. It was a 'Camper Special'?

It's a pretty straight old truck.

What exactly are you trying to figure out?First of all,what year is it?Except for`67,nothing unusual about having a GMC with a V8,chrome grille,wood floor,dual headlamps,4spd,Custom Camper option...
Where did the mechanic get his info about it having a Muncie trans before?How much of what you say it has or had is from what you see and how much is from the SPID(option sheet on glovebox door)?

Trying to figure out what engine, trans, etc. as I am going to try and sell it.
Don't know what it's worth. Got to air the tires up and pull it up out of the woods and pressure was it.

I found a warranty book in the glove box that said 1968 GMC. Delivery date was 6/25/1968.

All the glass is good, needs a new bench seat.

Someone has replaced the 1/2ton rearend with a 3/4 ton rearend.

As far as a Muncie, I don't know if that guy knew wat he was talking about.

It has some kind of metal plate on the inside of the warranty book.

It's inversed, so, I've got to figure out what it says.

The metal plate with inverted lettering you mentioned is called the protecto plate. It adds a little value to the truck. The dealership would swipe this like a credit card when the truck was taken in for service. They are usually misplaced and in my experience, are only found 25% of the time. my brothers and I have had 8 trucks and only had one truck woth the protecto plate. any pics of the GMC? I am partial to the four headlight trucks. My dad has a 71 GMC 1/2 to short step we restored and I am working on a 72 GMC K2500 4X4

Also have a 1954 Ford 1/2 ton SNB.

Just kidding about the before and after. I WISH. The grey GMC was super clean when we started. The tan (?) truck is a lot rougher. Originally light green w/ a dk grn cab top.

Man, you had me going there! That last one is a BEAUT!

Getting ready to go down and start getting the old beast ready to pull hup here to the barn. I used to drive her about 10-15 years ago. Had to quite driving when my vision got to bad.

She would make a great son-dad project truck.

Should have some pictures later today.

Any info on that Protecto Plate that would help identify the engine and tranny?

Not whole lot of surface rust on mine, most of the wood is rotted out in the bed, the windows have been kept rolled up. mice have chewed the seats up.

Appreciate it, but, that URL didn't work.

Finally got the old girl pulled out of the woods. All day job getting the tires aired up. Got everything cleaned out.l Believe it or not, the wiring is still in GOOD shape under the hood. Didn't find any SPID in the glove box, whatever that is.

Any recommendations before I try to put a battery in and see if she will turn over? Been sitting out ther for 11 years. Still had coolant in the radiator, good sign.

The SPID is the sticker/option list on the inside of the glove box door. It may not be there, not uncommon on 67 and 68 GMCs for some reason.

This GMC has a BIG rear window if that is any indication of a year range.

It was first sold in Wyoming. I'm the second owner.

Did they make a 396 v8 for GMCs?

Looking at the photo;

This doesn't look like a 68, nor does it look like that VIN belongs to this truck.
This looks like a 69 or a 70, 4X4 truck... quite possibly a real 3/4 ton rig.
if you can get photos of the inside, under the hood, and the side of the truck, it'll help us in figuring out what it is.

OKay, that might help explain some of this: trying to read that plate in the Protecto-Plate(?):

FIRST LINE: 396 0000 CE10D-PB39799
SCND LINE: RXSTD 3.54 ID149700
THRD LINE: TRAT400 GMC1

The rest is the original owners address in CHeyenne, Wyoming
Delivery Date: 6/25/1968

The Book is called the 1968 GMC Truck Owner Protection Plan

Wondering if I should look under the seat for some kinda paperwork like they used to do.

Here`s what I do...

Go to www.photobucket.com and open an account.
Click Browse,open,upload.
The bottom line under the picture is the one to click to say "copy".
Go to where you want the picture and "paste" it.
I just open Photobucket and this website to go back and forth.
