Whats the best transmission fluid to use in a 3-speed colum shift? Its a 69 with the original transmission from when it had a I-6.

I would say the synthetic gear oil personally... I think it's usually called 75/90... something like that anyways.

Re: Best transmission fluid for 3-speed?
Stupid question, how do you drain the oil?
Not sure exactly what kind of tranny it is. the numbers are GM16 8(or 3)82547, it is a three speed column shift from an original I-6 and its a '69 |

Some of them have a drain plug that will"drain" out. I think there are some that you have to pump the oil/fluid out before you add the new stuff. I do not remember if our standard 3 on the tree tranny had a drain pulg or not.

Re: Best transmission fluid for 3-speed?
Some have a drain in the bottom of the tranny, others don't.Usually a vacuum pump is used to remove the gear oil from them.I have pulled the side cover to get the last of it out(the truck was in a flood up to the bottom of the windows). If you pull the side cover be very careful since the shift forks may not line up if you aren't familiar with them.

Re: Best transmission fluid for 3-speed?
ok. i'll pump it.
i've been hearing a funny wine, tansmission rpm specific. almost like going fast in reverse just not as loud. the level was slightly under the one plug (on passengers side), 1/2" but it was dark brown like engine oil. ??? |
